ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: BEYOND THE GLASS
A room that seems to have been loosed from the margin of a mathematics textbook and set down inside a dream: black-and-white stripes march up the walls in perfect militant rows then fold and twist into a dizzying checkerboard that corrugates the ceiling. Below concentric black-and-white rings spiral outward from a circular rug a hypnotic whirlpool frozen in lacquer. The far wall answers with a target of its own—an exact infinite staircase of nested squares—each step narrowing to a vanishing center that pulls the eye and promises depth beyond the glass. Glassy shelves float at varying heights like transparent planes of ice. They slice the space into layers and on them balance a choreography of primary forms: cubes and bars and blocks in apple-red taxi-yellow cobalt blue and signal green each one precise as a gem. Some blocks sit half in shadow and half in light their colors refracting through the clear planes around them so that a single object throws off borrowed hues and phantom reflections. A red-and-green cube seems to be tumbling toward the foreground caught mid-roll its edges impossibly sharp against the soft blue haze of the distant wall. Larger transparent cubes hang in the air their surfaces containing smaller scenes. One encloses a bullseye—perfect concentric rings of red white and blue—like a planetary emblem suspended within crystal. Another cube cages a composition of colored blocks offset as though someone has frozen a building mid-construction. Each transparent face refracts the striped room the stripes do not stop at the glass but continue across it displaced and bent so that the pattern reads simultaneously as flat graphic and as something volumetric. Thin red rods and blue planes cut across the middle distance slicing the composition with a calm surgical geometry. They punctuate the space with linear rhythms guiding the eye from one hovering object to the next. Tiny colored blocks drift near the vanishing square in the back wall like a constellation of punctuation marks that insist there is motion here—an arrangement about to rearrange. The back wall itself tiled in a cool blue grid softens the stark monochrome and gives the whole scene the suggestion of a sky—an urban horizon compressed into a studio. Light is crisp and unyielding the kind that announces itself by making every edge a line of authority. Surfaces mirror one another: a red cube’s face returns a sliver of checkerboard a yellow block reflects a loop of concentric circles the transparent shelves double and triple objects creating echoes that make the space feel larger and more mysterious than its proportions allow. Perspective is a trickster: floor and ceiling conspire to push the eye deeper to suggest corridors of stripe that might continue forever. Stand here for a moment and the room becomes a machine that arranges and rearranges attention. The geometric shapes are not static props but actors paused between decisions. The target squares on the wall dare you to step closer the floating cubes seem to be keeping pace with an unseen clock. Everything is measured composed and yet on the edge of motion—the visual equivalent of a held breath a scene that feels like the turning of a page promising the next arrangement the next angle the next revelation just beyond the frame.
