ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: GANGLY CREATURE
The scene opens like a page torn from a child’s fever dream: a tall gangly creature — part dino part mischievous puppet — fills the foreground. Its skin is a sunburnt orange freckled with darker spots the texture somewhere between rubber and ripe citrus. Two enormous clock-faced eyes dominate its bulbous head each glassy dial holds tiny metallic hands frozen in different slants giving the beast an expression that is astonished amused and oddly punctual all at once. A wide grin splits its face revealing a pink tongue and a mouth that seems permanently ready to burst into delighted laughter. Above and behind it a cosmic carnival hangs suspended in a teal-night sky. Planets and orbs dangle on thin strings like Christmas decorations each a miniature world — a red ringed globe glows like a lantern while smaller beads and spheres twinkle like low-hung stars. Between them tiny trinkets sway: watches and keys and little tools that catch stray light chiming silently as if tuned to the rhythm of some music you can almost hear but cannot name. Antennae sprout from the big creature’s head tipped with little bulbs that wink and bob like lanterns on the prow of some interstellar barge. Two smaller companions flank the giant each a distinct character in this bizarre tapestry. To the left a rotund eager creature with a single unicorn-like horn clasps its tiny hands as if in reverence or perpetual wonder. Its posture says “ready for mischief” its face an earnest smile. To the right a taller leaner figure carries a stemmed glass cradling a deep red liquid — a goblet raised in a convivial toast to the assembled toys of the sky. A sprig of something golden sprouts from its crown a jaunty flourish that reads like a feather stuck there for style rather than function. The background is alive: a gulf of dark blue sprinkled with pinprick stars constellations that feel less scientific map and more collage of memories. Strings hang down from the heavens each ending in a curious object — a tiny telescope a thimble a dangling bell — as if someone has turned the universe into a workshop and is in the middle of redecorating. Light pools and reflects across the glossy surfaces so the whole tableau seems to pulse with a private joke a festival held for those who dream in color and clockwork. There’s no sense of danger here — only whimsical communion. The creatures’ faces are trusting carnival-minded the clocks in the eyes suggest a gentle play with time as though they are both keepers and forgetters of the hours. You can almost hear the soft tink of dangling metal and the muffled applause of the planets and you might imagine that if you stepped closer the tall creature would lean down and whisper the rules of this small universe: laugh linger and never mind the hour.
