ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: RECTANGULAR FRAME
A hush falls before the painting and you find yourself drawn into a strict ordered world where geometry has rehearsed its gestures and then decided to improvise. A bold circle — not whole but suggested by overlapping arcs and clipped by the rectangular frame — sits almost center stage. Its outermost sweep is a citrus ribbon of yellow that crescents from the upper right to the lower left like sunlight skimming a horizon. Inside that ribbon a cooler band of green hugs the curve then a ring of sky-blue settles below and at the very heart a white disk punctured by a small black center stares like a pupil. For a moment the composition reads as an all-seeing eye calm and unnervingly attentive. Around this eye the canvas is partitioned into confident blocks of color. Red occupies the upper left opposite a deep green in the upper right a square of black anchors the left edge and is echoed by a triangular black wedge at the lower right. The bottom left brightens to sunflower yellow while the lower right opens out into clean white interrupted only by the blue semicircle that spills from the central ring. A little orange tab at the very base — almost an afterthought — tips the balance a punctuation mark of warmth against the cooler blues and greens. Lines meet and deny completion: rectangles are bisected by curves semicircles are swallowed by hard angles the black shapes carve negative space that feels as deliberate as a stagehand’s shadow. The juxtaposition of curved and angular warm and cool creates tension — a dialogue between motion and restraint. The eye at the center does not demand to be read literally instead it watches the arrangement of colors converse listening as each hue asserts its tone and then yields to the next. Walking away you sense a story that never quite resolves. Is the painting observing you or are you tracking the orbit of its internal system — the yellow arc like a halo the blue like water pooling the black center like a secret? It resists a neat interpretation preferring the spark of questions: who arranged these elements and to what end? The work remains poised in that moment between symmetry and surprise an abstract fable told in primary colors and precise edges that invites you again and again to read different chapters into the same circles and corners.
