ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CONVERSATION PARTNERS
You step closer and the picture greets you like an invitation folded into colored paper. At the center is a face made of geometry: two almond eyes rimmed in black set symmetrically but not quite identical each contained within its own colored field. A simple triangular nose points down between them. Beneath a compact black mustache — a neat crescent — gives the face an old-world seriousness balanced by a tiny red mouth that could be a smile caught mid-thought. The head wears a hat of shapes: a broad green semicircle anchors the top trimmed by bands of blue red and black that suggest a brim. To the left a round lollipop-like medallion veers outward — concentric segments of color like a herald’s badge or a carnival prize. On the right stacked semicircles in soft blues and pinks rise like tiered balconies adding rhythm and counterpoint to the flat planes. Colors are conversation partners here. Warm oranges and reds press forward and claim attention cool blues and greens recede creating depth out of flatness. Beige surrounds everything like old paper giving the bold hues a vintage hush. Lines — thick and thin horizontal and vertical — slice the composition into registers like piano keys or the ribs of a folded map. Where rectangles meet circles the eye wants to resolve the tension the artwork refuses and instead invites you to keep looking. Look closer and the details begin to tell stories of their own: a strip of tiny alternating blocks at the bottom that could be a lapel or a checkerboard table a narrow horizontal bar crossing the brow like a band or a visor small circles nested inside larger circles like eyes peering through periscopes. Each simple shape reads like a word in a language you don’t yet know but feel compelled to learn. There’s a charming ambivalence — mechanical and human at once. The arrangement is precise constructed as if by a clockmaker who loved parades. The figure could be a stoic street performer a city watchman painted in bright costume or simply a fresh thought given face assembled from blocks of color and the artist’s delight. The mustache and the hat give it character the geometric features grant it anonymity. It is both a portrait and a machine for looking. As you move away the image keeps working on you. The bold shapes stay in your mind like the refrain of a song. It doesn’t narrate a single story it offers cues — a hat a badge a watchful pair of eyes — and dares you to invent the rest. The composition folds shut like a book you want to open again its bright pages promising a new arrangement of shapes each time you do.
