ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: SET IN MOTION
It stands on a small plain wooden platform like an altar to thrift-store geometry. At the bottom a box the size and face of an old speaker or compact washing machine — matte black grillless its round window a quiet dark eye — anchors the whole construction. A short metal column rises from one corner of the box like a spine holding a constellation of mismatched parts that somehow know how to balance. Above that spine a cylindrical metal body tilts forward on a diagonal polished steel interrupted by a band of warm brown leather marked with a white X. The tube looks less like a machine part and more like a long solemn arm or a cannon in mid-gesture its chrome surface catching the studio light and reflecting the white space around it in muted distorted slices. At its lower end a wooden handle smoothed by use suggests a lever or wand—an instrument that might be grasped pulled set in motion. Atop the composition is a head that demands attention: a white ceramic or painted canister with a mouth ripped wide in a painted scream. The mouth is a red gaping oval rimmed in black it looks like a vintage cartoon shouting into the void. There are no eyes — or maybe the head’s emptiness is an eye in itself an absence that makes the painted mouth all the more emphatic. Tilted over that head like a jaunty comical hat is a black rubber plunger. Its rubber bell sits at an angle its handle leaning away like a jaunty plume lending the piece personality and an air of theatrical absurdity. A mop-head with grey tassels hangs like a ceremonial beard from a slender rod beside the torso. Opposite it a round pumice-like stone or textured sphere rests within a small red cylinder like a helmeted heart. Metal rods and pegs punctuate the sculpture like guitar strings or antennae connecting disparate objects with the tidy industrial logic of a Rube Goldberg prophet. The red accent — the band on the torso the cup cradling the round stone the painted mouth — stitches the work together with small blood-bright punctuation. The whole thing reads like a moment captured just before motion: the shouting head about to announce something the long metal body cocked as if to swing the mop-beard trembling with expectation. Yet it is resolutely still: the studio light flattens the white background isolating the figure so every scratch every join every repurposed household relic is legible. Metal meets rubber meets wood meets fabric each texture tells a different story of use and abandonment. Look closely and you can imagine the provenance — found objects gathered up from ceremonies of domestic life: the plunger’s years of wet service the speaker’s lobbying for loudness the mop’s tired tassels. Reassembled they become a creature of reclaimed memory a mechanized storyteller whose scream might be laughter alarm or the first line of a long strange tale. It waits for sound for movement for someone to turn the handle and make it speak.
