ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ORDINARY WORLD
You awaken on a platform that refuses to belong to the ordinary world — a polished disc suspended over a sea of clouds its chrome rim catching the last gold of a sinking sun. The surface beneath your feet is patterned in black-and-white tiles an impossible chessboard that seems to ripple as the light shifts. Somewhere to your right a great wheel spins with a hypnotic insistence: a blurred ring of alternating squares that turns so fast it becomes a living tunnel its central gear ticking like a patient heart. Around you the air is full of delicate machinery and careful balances. A mobile of colored triangles and rectangles hangs like a painter’s experiment rods and wires connecting shapes that tilt and counterweight one another with imperceptible corrections. When a breeze — or a ghost of a breeze high above the earth — passes through a row of slender chimes emits a crystalline cascade. The sound is neither loud nor small it is the kind of noise that rearranges memory the clear notes dovetailing with the mechanical metronome of the wheel. Beneath and beside the platforms luminous spheres hover perfect moons that glow with warm inner light. They float at different heights mirrored in the chrome and glass their reflections multiply until the whole scene becomes an elaborate ordered infinity. Each disc is set on another disc concentric rings within rings like a series of targets shot through with color and light. The surfaces capture twilight in bands of iridescent sheen — blues become violets gold bleeds to rose — and every motion sends a ripple of color across the metal skin. A tall angular tower rises like a totem of geometry: stacked triangles small circles and thin rods all balanced with the solemn ceremony of a cathedral. Atop it a tiny blue sphere winks like an eye. The structure looks both fragile and inexorable as if someone assembled an equation of shapes and then left the cosmos to solve it. Nearby a smaller platform holds a perplexing gameboard another checkerboard that invites you to imagine moves and countermoves in a place where gravity has been politely asked to step aside. The scene is alive with suggestion: the spinning wheel that could be a portal or a clock the chimes that feel like coded messages the mobiles like flags of a language you once half-understood. Light and motion conspire to make time elastic — the wheel’s center hums with centrifugal energy the hanging shapes rotate slowly and the floating moons maintain a patient steady orbit. Each element is in conversation balancing and rebutting composing a music of physics and whimsy. You step from one ring to the next and the floor sings underfoot a mingling of metallic resonance and soft cloud-muffled silence. Up above the sky is both theatre and witness: smudges of pearled pink and indigo distant clouds like islands drifting away. There is no horizon here that could anchor expectations — only suspended artifice and the promise that if you keep moving the next platform the next tilt of the mobile might reveal an answer to why such a place exists. Or it might simply invite you to stand and listen to the wheel and the chimes and the patient turning of a world made of balance and possibility.
