ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: BETWEEN JOURNEYS
The image opens like a secret window onto a countryside that has been remembered in dreams rather than seen with the eyes. A swath of sky crowns the scene a restless cobalt roiled with lavish white brushstrokes that curl and spool like smoke or the tails of restless sea-creatures. Clouds tumble across it buoyant and emphatic each stroke insisting on motion — the impression of wind that has shaped everything beneath it. Below the land rolls in a rhythm of layered waves. Hills of burnished ochre and citrine rise and fall their tops kneaded with a warm almost golden light. Between them darker blues and greens pocket into hollows suggesting shaded valleys and hidden streams. A narrow ribbon of path—pale sinuous insistently leading—meanders from the lower edge toward the distant hills bending like a thought that keeps circling back to itself. On the left a cypress or a spire of black-green stands like a sentinel its brushwork vertical and urgent against the horizontal cadence of the fields. Nearby a thin leaning pole or tree tilts toward the right as if bowing to something beyond the frame. The fields themselves are painted in voluptuous bands of verdant greens and sunlit yellows rows curve and meet then diverge again creating a living map of furrows and growth. Little clumps of rounded darker green—shrubs trees small groves—punctuate the midground each dab of paint suggesting leaf and shadow without insisting on literal detail. To the right of this living flowing scene the artist has placed an almost architectural column of color — a vertical register that reads like a modern frame inserted into a pastoral memory. Blocks of black a pale ghostly blue and a radiant yellow stack and press against the landscape. The pale blue field is faintly inhabited: within it shapes like whispers suggest elongated figures or reflections ghostly and ambiguous as if memory had tried to take human form and failed leaving only an echo in pigment. Along the bottom runs a sequence of solid rectangles—red ochre green black—like the solid beats of a drum measuring the painting’s lower edge. The contrast between the organic sweep of the countryside and the stern geometry of the bordering panels feels deliberate like a story told in two voices. One voice is the old one — wind soil a road that remembers the soles that walked it. The other is a new hard-edged language of color and plane that interrupts the scene measuring and containing it. Together they make the viewer uneasy and curious: is the landscape being framed for preservation commodified into a palette or rescued from abstraction by these assertive blocks? There is movement everywhere: sky sweeping fields curling the leaning pole suggesting a companionable tilt toward the column the path leading insistently onward. Yet there is also an aftertaste of silence — the kind that comes just before someone speaks in a room full of memory. It feels like a moment perched between journeys: the road invites you the cypress warns you the colored blocks set the terms. If you step closer you can almost sense the breath of wind across the canvas as if the image could at any moment wander off the frame and continue its course across an actual horizon.
