ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CROSSING THE BOUNDARY
The sky is the color of bruised teal a thin pale moon watching like an indifferent eye. Under it the beach has turned into a stage for impossible life: a towering skull-shaped bloom rises from a corkscrew trunk its hollow eyes mottled with bright ovals and its lower jaw melting in thick candy-bright rivulets. The colors run down the trunk and pool on the sand spreading into veins of paint that take on the cadence of a slow thoughtful tide. Around that living sculpture the shore is dotted with things that should not belong to any taxonomy. One creature walks on lopsided legs its head a porous globe like weathered coral another shuffles with the amphibious dignity of a displaced dinosaur scales gleaming in the moonlight a compact many-eyed mound withdraws and extends itself like a focus of nervous energy. Human silhouettes — long coats hats pulled low — stand at varying distances: some face the spectacle with the wary stillness of witnesses others move with deliberate purpose toward the safety of the streetlamps. The town presses up against this uncanny fringe brick storefronts and narrow doors warmed by lamplight. A figure in a doorway holds the threshold as if it were a border between two maps backlit and small against the enormity of what sprawls in the sand. The street is a straight dark gutter of civilization the creatures do not yet cross the line but they turn toward it with a patient curiosity that is not quite predatory and not quite benign. There is a sound that belongs to no single thing — the soft glop of color as it drips the dull thud of heavy uncertain footfalls the whisper of sand rearranging itself around new weight. Every oddity seems to breathe together: the skull tree pulses once a new stream of paint crawling like a bright tide and the moon slips a little more into cloud. The scene is waiting for the decision it cannot yet make. In the last strip of light between street and shore everything hangs on a thin hinge of possibility. Will the colors wash over the cobbles and stain the orderly lines of the town? Will the figures in doorways step forward or will they pull the curtains and pretend no horizon exists but the one they know? For a moment the world is a page before it turns all the breath caught in a reader’s throat as something both beautiful and uncanny edges closer to crossing the boundary.
