ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CRAFTSMAN’S ATTIC
The workshop smells of dust and oil and something sweeter—old paint gone dry and gone soft at the edges. Against a flat ochre board that eats the light a giant head hangs like a moon fallen into a craftsman’s attic. It fills the room with a sovereign silence. Its skin is the color of weathered plaster and sea-worn bronze streaked with pale blue veins and the ghost of turquoise paint. Lids of glass-dark eyes heavy and solemn hold a gaze that seems older than the room itself. Where hair should be a crown of slender rods and rusted nails thrust outwards each tipped with a glint—pins made from things that remembered other projects other lives. Below the jaw a pair of denim-clad legs stand where a neck should be feet planted on the wooden floor as if someone had stepped halfway into a mask and never completed the rest. The jeans are creased with movement the soles of the shoes are soft with dust. There is an odd private dignity in that incomplete figure a person who has chosen anonymity and totem at once. Around them the workshop is an archaeological dig of intent. Kettles and canisters sit like small domestic planets tins with flaking labels cradle brushes whose bristles are splayed like the manes of tiny beasts. A coil of rope a battered pot a rusting clamp—each object is an instrument and an accusation. On the floor a smaller sculpture reclines: the torso of a child its features smoothed from handling its arms gone its forehead pocked with paint. It looks up at the giant head with a question that the room keeps answering in silence. Hanging from the board are circular fixtures—metal eyes set into the wall—whose shadows march across the surface as the light shifts. A long thin rod leans against the corner like an exhausted sentinel. Paint pots bear scars of previous choices the lids are haloed with crusted pigments the colors of decisions made and later revised. Splinters of wood and flakes of clay stud the floor like confetti from a celebration that never ended. There is work here but also waiting. The head’s mouth is neither open nor closed it is a soft punctuation a comma that holds its breath. Its ears are pierced with loops of metal one cheek has a bruise of darker patina. Up close you can see the fingerprints of the maker—whorls of pressure around the eyes a thumb-swipe near the ear—reminders that this monument was coaxed into being by human hands. Outside the frame a window throws a narrow strip of light slicing through dust motes and giving the scene a suspended quality as if the workshop has paused to listen. Someone—an artist a vagrant god a curious child—has left this room layered in intentions. You feel the urge to step forward to pick up a brush to lift the smaller figure and set it against the larger one and see what conversation might start. But for now the head keeps its counsel enormous and inscrutable a relic of some private mythology waiting for the next hand brave enough to finish the story.
