ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: POLISHED MEMORIES
The thing rises from the forest like a cathedral of memory: a womans head rendered not in flesh alone but as a miniature metropolis every feature an architectural decision. Her cheek is smooth porcelain makeup swept in a bold blue that catches the warm honeyed light of the sky. Her eyelids are heavy painted a little melancholy — the kind of serenity that suggests someone who has stopped listening and started remembering. But where a throat should fall away into shoulders a labyrinth of pipes and spires takes over. Tiny turrets climb the curve of her skull copper tubes snake between portholes and domed rooms. Balconies and ladders fold in and out of one another like the pages of a book someone has read and then glued together. Wheels valves and small glass windows sit side by side with ornamental spheres and painted blocks the whole network suggesting a mind made visible: thoughts as ironwork memories as towers. Halfway down an opening reveals a stark counterpoint — an exposed skull scaled to the same heroic size and encased as though it were a reliquary. Its empty sockets stare out like wells. The skull is clean-boned paused between menace and relic around it the machine-architecture frames it almost reverently as if the skull is both the heart of the contraption and its raison d’être. Tiny mechanical arms and copper rings loop around the bone like the hands of clockmakers restoring an heirloom. Below the monument the ground is scattered with orbs and textured globes — marbles and planets left like offerings. Some are matte and pitted others lacquered bright a doughnut-shaped piece sits half-buried its glaze catching the light. These objects feel like the detritus of thought: discarded ideas polished memories experiments that never learned to walk. Behind the whole improbable figure a stand of dark pines rises their vertical needles a chorus of witnesses. They throw long blue-green silhouettes against the amber sky framing the constructed head and lending the scene a sense of quiet of distance. The yellow-gold horizon flattens the landscape into a stage making the mechanical woman and her inner skull read as an ancient play acted out at the forest’s edge. There is a hum implied in the image: valves that have been turned gears that might click if disturbed. The face though composed of inanimate material carries emotion — the soft tilt of the chin the calm placement of painted lips — while the exposed skull offers a cold punctuation a reminder of what underlies any façade. Together they create a story of architecture and anatomy of an inner citadel that houses both beauty and bone. You could stand there and imagine the tiny inhabitants of those balconies going about their business or the wind threading through the pipes like a slow thoughtful voice. The scene reads like a page you cannot put down: a testament to craft a shrine to remembrance and a gentle uncanny surrender to the fact that even the most beautiful facades have hollow spaces within.
