ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ERASING PURPOSE
Light fractures through a high unseen ceiling in rigid cathedral-like columns striking a suspended constellation of weathered spheres. They hover at every angle — some the size of boulders others barely the span of a childs chest — their surfaces scarred with pockmarks rust faded paint and the stubborn growth of lichen or barnacle-like crusts. Each orb catches the shafts differently: some drink the light and glow with inner halos others return it in dull metallic whispers. Between them hang tangles of chain and rope the remnants of what once tethered these objects to purpose here and there an elbow of brass or the skeletal frame of a broken instrument hints that these are not planets but relics machines gone soft with time. The floor is mottled with shadow and splintered highlights a mosaic of wet stone and scattered debris. Tiny particles hang in the beams turning the air into a slow luminous snowfall. Sounds — or the memory of them — seem muffled the place feels sealed away from wind and speech as if the world outside meets a thin glass and refuses to press further. In the near dark the silhouettes of taller engines rise like ruined columns their faces studded with bolts and portholes that look curiously like sleeping eyes. Near the lower right a lone figure crouches dwarfed by the vault above. They are small against the suspended world hands brushing the rim of a half-buried sphere. The gesture is tentative reverent — an archaeologist’s touch a child’s curiosity — and for a moment the scene becomes intimate. Light pools along their shoulders and the back of their head turning sweat or salt into a silver halo. They lean in listening to the hollow echo the orb gives back as if coaxing a story from the hollow metal. Upwards one particularly large globe dominates the center mottled in spirals of green and orange. A thin vine or braided cable snakes from its seam trailing downward and brushing other objects like a conductor linking instruments in an orchestra. Smaller devices dangle at angles from this web their pendulums stopped mid-swing. The whole composition suggests a deliberate abandonment — tools and buoys and instruments left to hang in some great breathed-out pause. The atmosphere is less of water than memory: not submerged but conserved where time rearranges surface and sound instead of erasing purpose. Rays of light cut away the dust to reveal hidden inscriptions the ghostly outlines of maps painted years ago or simply the smear of someones thumb. Each sphere is a sentence each chain a punctuation mark together they form a story that refuses to give one answer. Instead it offers an invitation — reach out turn the orb and perhaps a secret long hushed will stir and roll like a distant bell.
