ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: A MEMORY’S NEGATIVE
She steps out of the canvas as if the paint itself had been breathing and then held its breath. In the foreground a young woman’s face stares straight ahead — pallid porcelain-pale every pore and pore’s shadow exaggerated into tiny topographies. Her eyes are the first thing that claim you: large rimmed with dark hollows like wells that have been emptied too many times. They are not quite human in their stillness they hold light but refuse to reflect it giving the impression that you are peering into a memory rather than a person. Fine hairline cracks and flecks of pigment crawl across her cheeks and forehead suggesting skin that has been painted on weathered and then left out in the rain. Behind her not behind as in subordinate but as a living echo is a silhouette in deep indigo and graphite. It’s a profile — a shadow-self carved out of midnight — that turns its face away to the left. Where the woman’s features are rendered with obsessive fragile detail the silhouette is blocky pocked with small keyhole-like abrasions and flecks where the underlayer of the canvas shows through. It reads like a memory’s negative: the same head the same tilt but flattened and smeared an outline of identity that refuses to be contained by a single angle. Between them the paint runs. Streaks of umber and black bleed down in vertical rivers as though tears have been allowed to pool and then spill. A blaze of orange flares at the crown and upper right hot and corrosive its pigment sprayed and spattered in a pattern that resembles a sudden sunset or the scorch marks of a fever. Tiny red blooms — like dried blood or miniature poppies — dot the lower half their stems trailing down in thin hesitant lines. These are not decorative accidents they look like signposts small wounds that remember how to weep. The texture is as important as the portrait itself: scratches scored through layers of paint metallic flecks catching light at unlikely angles patches where the gesso has been gouged so the underpainting bleeds through. Around her mouth the shadow of graphite gives the suggestion of words never spoken around her temples faint veins of rust lead toward the silhouette’s forehead and mingle with the orange as if two different energies were meeting and then politely refusing to fuse. There is an atmosphere of arrested narrative — the sense that you have stepped into a decisive moment between chapters. Is the dark profile an echo of a former self an accusation or an absent lover who left a silhouette stamped into memory? Is the woman in front the survivor or the afterimage? Her expression is ambiguous: not quite resigned not quite defiant a neutral that becomes almost violent under the pressure of the rest of the composition. She is both fragile and unrelenting the paint suggests erosion and also the preservation of something valuable. The composition forces you to choose where to sit in the story. Look long enough and you begin to feel the two faces breathe at different speeds: one slow and dense made of shadow and habit the other sharp and awake powdered with the residue of emotion. The orange above is like a tinderbox waiting for a single careless thought. The drips below are the slow tally: time’s reckoning measured in pigment. It reads like a confession painted in a single sitting — urgent bittersweet and unable to let itself be tidy. The image doesn’t answer the question of who she is it offers instead the sensation of having been asked a question you don’t remember learning the words for and the ache of wanting to answer anyway.
