ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: IMPERFECT GEOMETRY
From above the scene reads like a map laid out for a conspirator: a rectangle of worn plaster and paper punctured by squares of color a chessboard of red yellow black and grey where lives have been folded and refolded. At the center a man sits with his back to us — a pale shirt a dark collar the small baldness of a head seen from the sky. He is pinned to the composition as if a pawn set down on a tabletop city. Around him the world is arranged in carefully imperfect geometry: blocks of pigment a vertical grey slab like a column black rectangles that anchor the composition. The colors are modernist and muddied as though a Mondrian had been dropped into a kitchen and then weathered by coffee and conversation. Objects orbit him. Nearby a round black plate sits like a small moon another bowl with a concentric swirl looks almost like a camera lens recording the scene. Utensils and crumbs trace tentative lines crumbs like punctuation marks. A stray loaf or a torn piece of bread rests on the red plane its crust a tan smudge against the ordered color fields. Dark splotches and thin hairline cracks spider out across the backdrop — the whole surface has been lived in folded spilled upon a history in caffeine and abrasion. To one side a darker figure slumps indistinct almost the shadow double of the seated man — a presence more suggestion than person heavy and absorbent. Between them a smaller fuzzed shape — a child a dog a coat turned on the chair — leans into the composition like a comma softening the angles. Above all of them at the top edge of the frame something like a ceramic orb with a dark center hangs above the geometry. It might be a lamp a bowl an eye. Around it the paint has pooled and burst into tiny black stars a delicate constellation of splattered ink that makes the domestic feel ceremonial. There is a silence you can almost hear: the geometry keeps everything tidy while the stains insist on memory. The squares and lines suggest plans — blueprints for a conversation — while the stains insist on mistakes on lives that refuse to stay within their borders. One can imagine the scraped chair legs the movement of hands reaching for bread the slow settling when cups are set down. The scene holds the precise charged moment right before a confession or after one its narrative is built of absences and residues rather than outspoken gestures. As the eye travels down the image a black rounded shape anchors the lower edge like an animal curled sleeping or like a void consuming the neat order above. Little flecks of gold like spilled spices catch the eye and insist that whatever happened here was at once ordinary and vital. You are left with the feeling of having looked through a skylight into a domestic ritual—familiar yet abstract—where every stain is a sentence and every square a decision. The final page has not been turned the crumbs and the smears are a promise that the story will be resumed messy and exact at the next sitting.
