ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FLOATING NEIGHBORHOODS
She stands at the edge of the sunflower field as if pausing between two worlds. The flowers rear up behind her in a sea of gold—faces turned dutifully their dark centers like tiny sundials—while the river purrs at her feet reflecting the sky and the improbable things it cradles. She is dressed in a white frock gone a little soft at the edges from walking the skirts balloon gently catching the stray breeze. A straw hat shades her face though from where you stand you can feel the thoughtfulness pressing through: a woman who has come out of a novel and stepped onto a painting. Beyond her the town sprawls with polite architecture—gingerbread roofs neat windows and a town square where a bronze statue keeps a lonely watch. But the real city floats above it all. Chunks of earth perfect islands ripped from the ground hover like ships in a calm sky. Each holds its own tale: a café with a scarlet awning where diners lean over coffee cups and the clink of porcelain seems impossibly to echo down below a miniature temple with a domed roof a stone equestrian cast against the clouds. Vines and little trees cling to the undersides roots dangling like fringe. Seagulls and white doves thread between them braiding the scene together. On one of the floating islands a waiter in a vest reaches toward a table where strangers laugh as if they have forgotten gravity. A woman there reads a book and does not look up. Below on the river island a single tree shelters a small statue its pedestal rimed with moss—the sort of object a city keeps to remember what it once vowed to be. Closer now two small children sit on a bench carved from the river’s edge their knees crooked and their boots muddy from playing among the reeds. They wear pink and the little hats on their heads bloom into rabbit ears—costume game or some private fantasy you could not untangle even if you tried. One beats time with a stick on the boardwalk the other watches the sunflowers caught between the enormous ordinary and these sudden pieces of the sky. A painted rabbit perhaps a toy leans beside them like a sentry. Across the path a woman carrying a basket walks away toward the town her silhouette small against the sweep of cobblestones and lamplight that suggests evening though the sky is a high milky blue. The air must smell of sunflowers and bread and river—warm and a little damp—the way afternoons in good towns do. If you tilt your head you see the mechanics of enchantment. Steam puffs from a kettle at the café a flock of white birds stirs the upper air and makes a lace of shadows on the roofs below a tiny child waves at something on an island and the motion is echoed by a statue that seems almost to acknowledge the greeting. The floating islands are not inert scenery but neighborhoods with their own economies of noise and habit: a bell rings faintly laughter spills a distant violin tugs on the edges of the quiet. A painted cart makes its way along the riverbank where the cobbles meet the water—an old horse maybe or an old idea of a horse—pulling along a promise that travel is still possible even when the highways rise into the clouds. The whole scene is a ledger of small economies: sunflowers trade light for bees the river gives away reflections and people exchange glances that hold histories and future meetings all at once. You want to follow her—the woman in white—onto the ferry of sky to learn the names of the floating neighborhoods and the reason the statue lifts its arm as if to point the way. But for the moment she stands hands tucked at her waist looking out across the sunflowers and the water as if deciding whether to be anchored by what is known or to accept the invitation spelled in blue above her. The world waits politely its stories suspended like islands and all you can do is turn the page and step a little closer.
