They say a town can dream and here the town has woken into a private myth. The ground is a mosaic of cracked earth and scattered masonry an inland sea of forgotten rooftops and open courtyards where towers sprout like solemn trees. Between them the horizon pulls away into a pale endless plain. Everything is quiet and deliberate — as if the scene is holding its breath to listen for a sound that will never come. Above this arrested city the sky has become a theater. A luminous moon bears a human face behind round spectacles its expression half-amused half-conspiratorial as if it remembers a joke from centuries ago. Tiny impossible houses float like thimbles and dice a spoon-shaped boat hovers midair. Paper planes and small winged contraptions drift between pillars and chimneys. Clouds are sculpted into curious shapes that echo the city’s geometry giving the whole panorama a staged uncanny symmetry. People and buildings have swapped confidences. A tall rectangular tower is carved with a stern oversized face its features hewn into the stone as if the architecture itself were an actor wearing another actor’s mask. A slender woman stands on a circular pedestal at the center of the square poised like a statue caught mid-gesture — both vulnerable and defiant under the wide sky. Nearby a block with a human-sized keyhole contorts into a door that is also a face a smaller figure leans against it in an attitude that is half-exhaustion half-waiting. Faces float as freely as the objects — severed oversized and perfectly composed. One is high and contemplative a profile set against the moonlit hemisphere another is a narrow elongated head with eyes that seem to measure time itself. On the ground level a woman with an ornate floral crown stares outward with steady intimate eyes that invite and repel curiosity in the same breath. A young child’s cherubic head peers from the foreground a quiet counterpoint to the monumentality around it. The architecture is anthropomorphic: bell towers hold their own private gazes arches open like mouths stairways lead to nowhere but expectation. Small figures populate the ruins — a man in a doorway a group moving between columns someone reclining beside an urn. You could step into the canvas and never know if you were arriving or leaving. Every object is both symbol and inhabitant every face both memory and mask. The city is at once a stage and a confession and the picture closes around you like a page turning: you want to know what happens next but the next page has already been folded into the sky.
