ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: NEEDLES AND DOMES
The city breathes in concentric rhythms an enormous clockwork lung of stone and brass that inhales through spires and exhales through domes. From the center of it all rises a face — not carved from the same masonry as the towers but grown from ribboned metal and living vine an impossible portrait assembled of curling filigree and sap-bright tendrils. It is expressionless and infinite the face of memory made monument eyes like inlaid obsidian watching the streets spin below. Streams of metallic hair unfurl from its temples each strand twisting into streets and bridges until the portrait and the metropolis are indistinguishable. Beneath that face lower than the clouds but higher than any true foundation an enormous orrery anchors the scene: gears and rings interlocked planets caught in elliptical tracks. At its heart stands a solitary chess king weathered and alabaster which seems less a piece than an altar. Rings sweep past it like lanes of traffic smaller pieces — pawns and rooks reimagined as watchful sculptures — pivot on arms and cast long chessboard shadows over plazas dotted with trees shaped like spheres and mushrooms. The orrery doesnt merely mark time it manufactures it the slow turning of its arms dictating the citys day and night. All around the skyline is a forest of needles and domes. Thin lancet spires pierce a turquoise sky while bulbous observatories bloom like coral. There are balloons tethered to towers and planets hovering low enough to reflect the city in fractured segments — a planetary carnival mirrored in a thousand pupils. Streets wind between clustered minarets and clustered spheres packed so tightly they suggest a skin rather than urban planning: living porous and always moving. Somewhere invisible to the eye bells chime in sync with the rise of the rings a sound felt more than heard. If you walk the avenues — if the city will let you — youll meet markets under mosaic awnings where vendors hawk gears polished to a shine and vellum maps inked in impossible coordinates. Children chase each other along narrow bridges that smell of oil and orange blossom. Gargoyles with brass wings keep their austere vigil but the citizens faces are softened by a constant collective reverence for the face above and the king below as though governance and divinity were braided and sold at the same stall. Yet there is a tension threaded through the beauty: tendrils that sprout from the great face sometimes sink back into the ground like roots tugging at foundations and rearranging neighborhoods overnight. The orrery’s cadence occasionally stutters and when it does alleys stutter into new alignments domes tilt and lights flicker as if an unseen hand is shuffling the citys deck. Whispers move faster than the rings — a rumor that the king might fall or that the face might wake fully and speak. People build altars and take down signs adjust stars on their coats small rebellions bloom like mushrooms in basements. Over the horizon the skyline thins into a line of sentinels and domes then becomes the raw indifferent landscape. But the city’s center refuses to let go. Even the sky is stitched into the design: painted gradients of teal and coral hold small moons and planets in place while kites and airships drift like punctuation marks. The architecture seems less meant to be inhabited than to be performed before the face — an act of constant ceremonial living where every balcony becomes a balcony of witnesses. In the quiet hours when the rings slow and the colossal faces eyelids — if they are eyelids at all — droop halfway you can hear the tiny clink of pawn against pawn the faint argument of metal settling into its appointed slot. It is a city that remembers itself through movement: a mechanical heart beating in a body of stone and metal a portrait that feeds the streets and a ruler that stands carved and fragile at the axis. Walk its avenues long enough and you begin to understand the bargain it keeps — a trade of order for ritual of time for story — and how at any moment a single shift of a ring or a whisper from that living face could reorder everything beneath it.
