ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: COLLAPSING BILLBOARD
A hamburger as big as a planet hangs in the sky its sesame-seed crown glinting like a golden sun. Juice and lettuce spill in slow motion from its glossy dome and beneath it a smaller twin drifts like a satellite both casting impossible shadows over a pastel valley. The horizon is not hills but a postcard canyon — rust-red mesas carved against a cobalt sky — and palm trees sway where the desert meets suburban lawns. In the foreground a pool sits like a jewel so perfectly blue it seems to have been painted there to trap reflections. Around it mid-century bungalows with flat roofs and bright trim form a sleepy ring: striped umbrellas lounge chairs a lone inflatable ball waiting for someone or something to disturb the water. A few colorful gumball-like orbs — oversized fruit or childhood candy — have rolled into the scene dotting the lawns and sidewalks with playful absurdity. To the right a riot of collage rises like a carnival gone off the rails. A grid of repeated blonde faces in pop-art colors stares out in a cheerful eerie row each tile slightly different — a worship of celebrity reimagined as wallpaper.
