ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FORGOTTEN PLEASURES
The room arrives like a dream you almost remember: everything is the wrong size and the right color. A giant hamburger sits in the middle of a black-and-white checkerboard its sesame seeds catching an impossible light. The bun glows warm and soft the lettuce and tomato sit like bright flags the patty is a dark promise of comfort and hunger. It smells like every late-night craving you tried to forget and every picnic you once loved all compressed into one monumental almost holy sandwich. To the left a red-and-white Campbell’s can towers like a relic on a mantel its logo familiar but its label slightly askew — language playing at being a joke. A comic-book face peers over the edge of a framed maze a woman drawn in bold lines whose expression is both amused and knowingly ridiculous. Tiny people the scale of toys march and pause around the base of the can and the burger as if they are pilgrims at an altar: a matinee crowd in a museum of forgotten pleasures. The walls are a collage of snapshots and color blocks a thousand small images overlap like a memory wall in fast motion. Photographs tilt and press against one another Polaroid edges catching light forming a patchwork of lives. A child’s playroom has been transposed into an art installation: blocks a spinning top a princess doll in a mint-green dress standing guard near the doorway. The floor tiles check and warp underfoot leading you toward a corner where everything flows into a different logic. Above it all human silhouettes hang from the sky — paper dancers frozen mid-leap bright clothes like cutouts from a carnival poster. They arc against a cobalt field dotted with round blue moons their suspension reads like a promise that gravity is optional here. Beyond them the horizon is a quilt of hills: stripes of fuchsia mustard turquoise and saffron slide into rows of cypress and palm a landscape stitched from postcards and stage backdrops. In the right foreground a swirl the size of a dinner plate spins like a candy tornado ribbons of color that beckon and make your eyes swim. Nearby a small clownish figurine with an exaggerated smile seems to hold the swirl’s edge — or perhaps it is being held by it. The scene is layered in collage: torn paper edges crude glue marks the kind of art you make when you are trying to catch the feeling of a summer afternoon and pin it down. There is a delicious absurdity to the arrangement a deliberate mismatch of scale and sentiment. Food becomes fetish advertising becomes altar photographs become a life remixed into art-school theology. Each object argues for its own importance: the soup can insists on being iconic the burger demands to be eaten the photographs plead to be anthropologized. Yet none of them quite overpowers the others they exist in a constant agreeable squabble. You could stay and inventory every detail — the folded carnival ticket the tiny painted shoes the way the checkerboard seems to breathe — or you could take a step back and let your imagination do the rest. The image closes like a book at the edge of a page: vivid slightly disorienting and full of promises that something larger is waiting just beyond the collage’s edge.
