ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: COMPACT METROPOLIS
It hovers in the white like a secret memory made manifest — a compact metropolis sliced down the middle and held apart by a breath of negative space. From a distance it reads as a single block step closer and the eye begins to untangle layers: wooden planks the color of old maps raw concrete ribs and steel filaments piercing through like the veins of some engineered organism. Everything is sharply ordered yet arrested mid-gesture as if someone paused a city in the act of being assembled. Verticality dominates: tall slender columns rise and fall interrupted by cantilevered slabs that jut out like balconies from an impossible apartment block. There are narrow stair-like cadences carved into faces a ladder of shadows leading nowhere and repeated rectangular portals that suggest corridors thresholds and rooms. Semi-circular elements soften the geometry — a curved slab here a half-ring there — creating the sense of a language of forms being tested and retested across a rigid grammar. Textures argue quietly with one another. The warm grain of timber invites the hand while the cool pitted concrete reads like a remembered city wall. Thin metallic rods and rails thread through the composition detailing edges and punctuating planes giving rhythm and a fragile scaffolding to the heavier grounded pieces. Light sculpts the whole falling in precise bands that create deep black channels and luminous faces so that the same block can look both monumental and miniature depending on the angle of attention. Symmetry is not perfect but suggestive: two halves mirroring each other across that central cleft like a book opened to a page of blueprints. The resulting negative space is as important as the matter itself — a canyon of potential a place where wind might pass if there were any wind to be had. The structure reads like an architecture of ideas: modular iterative an experiment in how solids and voids might converse. You want to imagine inhabitants: a lone machinist climbing an external stair an archivist sliding a memory-laden plank into a slot or perhaps nothing at all only the echo of construction. Either way the piece holds its own story a suspended city of materials and intentions inviting you to walk its impossible corridors in the mind and discover small revelations behind every ledge and shadow.
