ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: STATUES AND DANCERS
A stage has been built out of color and axis lines and the first thing you notice is how the light refuses to be ordinary. It slices over planes of red blue and yellow and sets the whole scene humming as if some unseen conductor has just cued the overture. Shapes rise like architecture and machinery: boxes ramps an angular ribbon that twists through the center like a flag caught in mid-salute. The black background is not emptiness but a velvet sky that makes the colors sing sharper more urgent. Perched high on a stepped pedestal a naked woman sits with a casual menace of calm — limbs folded chin held as if she is both audience and arbiter. Her body is ivory against painted blocks her gaze a quiet metronome that measures the rest of the tableau. Beneath her at the left margin stands a second figure like a statue freshly walked away from its plinth. He is poised and classical in his bearing every muscle a study in restraint his posture reads like an old story rewritten in clean modern lines. Between them the composition cleaves and conjoins with geometric insistence. A ribbon of triangles and bars snakes diagonally bisecting the stage and knitting together the two halves. Around it mechanical motifs crowd: a fan-like wheel whose spokes suggest both motion and ritual tubular forms that could be pipes or arms stairways that lead to nowhere and everywhere at once. These are not merely backdrop but the scaffolding of a new myth an urban cathedral built of primary colors. On the lower center-right two other figures find their own fragile tableau. They are tethered to the geometric forms their bodies echoing the angles and arcs that surround them as though people and shapes have agreed to shape one another. To the far right another figure claims a different force. Wearing a headdress that reads like ceremonial circuitry he advances with a swagger that is almost defiant. His stance is dynamic limbs carved in the vivid browns and ochres of the palette and he seems to stride into the painting’s center as if answering a summons only he can hear. Around his head the rectangle frames shift like changing panels of a narrative comic insisting we watch his motion from multiple moments at once. Above abstract crescents and sweeping arcs hover like moons or masks giving the upper register of the picture a mystical punctuation. Shadows fall in hard-edged blocks carving volumes out of flat color and creating the illusion of space while reminding you of the artifice behind the scene. The whole arrangement reads like a stage direction: order one — the past order two — the present order three — the possible future and between them the gears of invention and desire click. There is tension in the way the classical and the modern stare at one another without quite meeting. Figures recall statues and dancers and workers and gods but none are pinned to a single meaning. The painting is a crossroads where bodies machines and symbols exchange glances and languages it insists you stay with it move from element to element and in doing so composes a slow inexorable story about creation competition and the uneasy harmony of the new world being built out of color and will.
