ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: A RELENTLESS COLLAGE
A long narrow chamber recedes like the throat of some solemn beast. The ceiling is low and studded with cold pinpoints of light two of them burst brighter than the rest throwing the floor into a thin hard sheen and turning every footstep into a small conspicuous punctuation. On either side the walls climb up in a relentless collage — thousands of tiny images paper clippings and fragments layered into a textured skin. Faces and places overlap until the originals blur there are smudges of color shouted fonts circles of pale blue and ragged red that look like badges or targets and the whole surface hums with the sensation of a history assembled from scraps. At the far end on a raised plinth stands a solitary figure frozen in profile. It is a silhouette at first glance — a person carved from shadow — but pinned behind it is a ferocious bloom of light. Hundreds of thin rods fan outward from a point just behind the head like the ribs of an exploding star or the quills of a giant sea urchin caught mid-gesture. The rods are a coral-pink harsh and electric each one sending a brittle ray across the hall. They throw latticework shadows that splice the floor and walls into a strange geometry making the familiar seem newly foreign. Scattered along the length of the room are other people but they do not breathe life into the scene so much as punctuate it. Men and women in dark coats and suits stand in small deliberate clusters or alone against the collage-covered stone hands clasped or tucked into pockets. Their faces are turned toward the lit figure expressions unreadable in the dim. The space between them and the plinth feels curated as if their positions were chosen to maintain a ritual propriety: witnesses arranged by an unseen director. Closer to the viewer a single figure moves forward — a compact silhouette with shoulders squared walking along the central aisle. The backlit posture is purposeful the stride slices through the strip of light on the floor and the silhouette’s shadow stretches long and thin swallowing the patterned ground behind it. There is an almost audible hush to the movement the kind of silence that gathers when a crowd waits for a secret to be spoken. Every step flakes against the galleries of faces on the walls as if the past itself is watching. The whole composition reads like an initiation carved in light and paper. The walls catalog what came before the radiant burst behind the pedestal threatens revelation or explosion the observers hold their places like appointed judges or protectors. The approaching figure is both intruder and pilgrim drawn toward that impossible bloom of rods with a curiosity that might be courage or compulsion. The scene is frozen at the brink of discovery — an instant heavy with the sense that once the next step is taken something long recorded and something immediate and incandescent will finally meet.
