ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FORGOTTEN OBSERVATORY
A tall panel of weathered color opens like the door of a forgotten observatory. On the left a broad field of ochre and warm orange holds a constellation of circles: a large sunlike disk a few smaller portholes a black orb that feels like a hole in the sky. On the right cooler blues and a band of deep slate punctuate the composition arcs and crescents nesting into one another as if two worlds are arranging themselves into alignment. Down the middle a vertical seam of black divides these hemispheres like the dark spine of a book and from it curves sweep outward — bridges of shadow and light that connect the disparate shapes. Each circle carries its own wear: scuffed paint faint rings little flecks of rust and dust. The surface is scored with hairline grids and measured arcs like the record of a draftsman’s hand. Some circles float serenely others press against edges and gutters cropped by the frame as though they are larger than the world that contains them. An archway appears at the lower left a miniature doorway within a disc and through that small aperture a rectangular window glows a distant blue — a suggestion of interior space amid all this planetary geometry. It is a surprise: the painting is not only about forms but about thresholds rooms within orbs secrets tucked behind abstract scaffolding. Color becomes character. The ochres and oranges smell of sun-baked plaster and dry earth the deep blues feel like winter water or late evening air. A strip of rust-red along the right edge reads like an old ledger or a torn page it adds a bruised warmth that keeps the whole scene from being merely schematic. White and pale disks punctuate the composition like moons dropped into place their paleness a small insistence against the denser tones. Black circles recur as gravity wells absences that anchor the motion of the lighter elements. There is movement even in stillness. The circles seem to orbit an unseen center the arcs suggesting the slow inevitable pull of tides. Thin chalked lines trace trajectories and alignments some are neat and mathematical others fray into abrasion implying time’s abrasion on even the most precise layouts. The eye follows these lines and finds again and again little contradictions: a perfectly measured arc meeting a rough hand-applied patch of color a tiny intimate doorway within an enormous planet. The overall surface reads like a map that is also a memory. Seams and panels recall a wall of joined canvases or a well-thumbed atlas the paint slightly dulled its edges softened. You can almost hear the echo of footsteps in the arch the distant click of gears as the moons in the composition slide imperceptibly toward new alignments. There is an implied story here — of constructing a city out of orbits of architects sketching dreams on a palimpsest of cosmologies folded into doorframes. In the end the painting does not resolve into a single reading. It offers instead a set of invitations: step through the tiny doorway and discover the blue chamber follow the path of the smallest red disk as if it were a key imagine the black stripe in the center as a spine to some impossible atlas. The geometry is precise the surfaces are worn and between those two facts there is a human hush — the quiet of someone who has been building counting and waiting for the next alignment to fall into place.
