The room feels like the inside of a secret kept for too long: a painted parlor frozen at the moment two lives brush up against one another. On the right a woman with hair the color of burnished copper sits in a wooden chair the grain of its arm polished from touch. Her dress is a small cosmos of orange and blue — a simple sundress scattered with tiny flowers — and it clings to her with the intimacy of a habit. She leans forward just enough that every line of her body suggests a question asked in the silence: the tilt of her chin the soft hollow of her throat the long careful placement of her hands on her knees. Beside her almost like an answering echo is a second woman who could be a memory made flesh. Her skin is the color of old paper flecked and stippled as if time itself has left freckles and dust. She is bare to the shoulder and to the world — not posed provocatively but shown with a quiet fragile honesty. Her black hair is pulled back her face holds the cool distant composure of a statue that remembers how to feel. The two are not the same yet they mirror one another’s posture so precisely that the scene reads like a conversation between a present and a ghost. They touch — or nearly touch — in the most ordinary of gestures and it becomes the hinge of the whole picture. The clothed woman’s fingers rest on her own lap palms open. Just behind them the pale figure’s hand lies slack and patient the shadow between the fingers a small country of loneliness. It’s an almost-touch: not the fever of a conjoined embrace but the careful politeness of two people who know the rules of remembrance. The gesture reads like the turning of a page a decision about whether to keep what is gone folded into memory or to set it gently down. The backdrop refuses to be simple.
