ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: STRANGE GARDEN
A strange garden unfurls beneath a sky the color of a vintage postcard — a thin wash of turquoise at the zenith that softens into a warm almost buttery yellow near the horizon. Scattered like the relics of an eccentric civilization dozens of objects rise from a carpet of moss and low grass: towering mushroom columns with puffy pink caps thin stalks that stretch like the stems of giant lollipops and clusters of coral-pink growths that look half plant half sculpture. In the distance low violet mountains fence the scene lending the whole tableau a contained dreamlike geography. At the center stands a crude tripod table fashioned from rough white wood. On it a congregation of tiny brightly painted figurines—blue yellow green—are arranged as if mid-conversation. Beside them a sculpted hand reaches skyward a spindly tower supports a cluster of objects that might be instruments or totems. Suspended above this altar is a moonlike sphere mottled grey and pocked hovering with an impossible stillness as if held in place by a single delicate chain. The orb casts a soft diffused light that gives every surface a sculpted cinematic clarity. Around the tripod the ground is strewn with artifacts that read like fragments of an artist’s daydream: a weathered sketch laid flat on the turf graphite faces smudged and intimate a bottle that resembles a tube of glue or paint its cap glinting a black-and-orange polyhedral ball whose hexagons look like a tiny planet smooth river stones a scattering of colorful marbles. These are not random they are curated detritus each object annotated by time and use — fingerprints in paint a ragged edge the tiny gouge of a careless nail. Vegetation and craft have fused here into hybrid forms. Spindly stems sprout disks and bells that hum with color coral clusters bloom in fluorescent pinks and yellows as if someone had planted soft sculptures and let them grow. A small saucer-shaped object with three legs resembles a toy spacecraft its surface pitted and patched suggesting countless landed journeys. In one corner a sheet of paper bears a drawing that seems too personal to be an accident: a face half-finished its lines echoing the whole landscape’s curious blend of whimsy and melancholy. Light here is deliberate and gentle. Shadows are soft-edged the kind created by a sun that is low and kind. Colors sing in pastel chords — bubblegum pinks citrus yellows robin’s-egg blues — but they are tempered by the neutral greys of stone and the earthier greens of moss. That unresolved question is the invitation the scene closes like a book at dusk compelling you to turn the next page and find out who or what left this little world behind.
