ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CHATHAM BARS
This photograph was taken on the Atlantic side of North Beach, the long barrier island that guards Chatham Harbor. On one side, the harbor is calm and serene, its waters protected and almost meditative. But step across the sandbar to the ocean side, and everything changes. There, the sea is wild, restless, and unpredictable. This stretch of coastline is part of the infamous “shark alley,” where white sharks patrol the breakers and prey on the gray seals that gather along the shore. It’s a place that is both treacherous and breathtaking, raw and an integral part of the oceans cycle. Despite its danger—or maybe because of it—it it will forever draw me, like a moth to a flame. RRB
