ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FRAMING A FACE
She sits closest to the viewer an island of cool porcelain against a sea of warm pigments. Her hair is black and swept into twin coils at the nape framing a face that is both deliberate and remote: high cheekbones a long neck eyes like shaded windows that have learned to look without revealing. A shawl with pale leaves and tiny blossoms is draped around one shoulder the pattern echoing the faint sprig that seems to grow impossibly from the painted ground at her side. Her lips are a quiet decisive red the rest of her keeps to a palette of soft bone and slate as if she were carved from the same material as the painting itself. Behind her a row of companions — or ghosts — stand in layered depth each turned slightly to a different angle of the same private conversation. To the left a woman in deep plum watches with a face shaped by restraint the violet of her dress deepens the shadow beside her jaw. Next a figure in a richly patterned dark robe steps forward only in silhouette her posture suggesting an older story folded under the weight of the fabric. The fourth set against a pale turquoise circle that reads like an impossible moon wears a dress of vertical bars and black keys — a piano of a gown that hints at music withheld. Between them the air is not empty but filled with an abstract current: ribbons of ochre peach and teal curl and rise like smoke or water connecting the women as if whispering a shared memory.
