ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: NOTHING IS ACCIDENTAL
They stand in a garden that feels more like a memory than a place — a stitched-together landscape of stone turrets curling smoke and an impossible turquoise sky. Two towers rise behind them like sentinels their conical roofs pierced by a pale watchful moon. A sun the color of lemon climbs at an odd angle. Clouds drift in drawn comma-shaped swirls and from one chimney a thin column of smoke curls like a note from a restless instrument. In the foreground a cluster of figures forms as if the illustrator took different lives and pressed them into a single family portrait. A red-haired woman in a rust-colored dress stands poised her hands clasped at her waist she looks like someone who has just stepped out of a story and is waiting for the next line. Beside her a younger blonde with a sharp bob and equal parts mischief and melancholy in her eyes leans forward as if about to whisper a secret. Between them and the architecture sits an austere man in a dark suit his face composed and lined with seasons he might be the one who keeps the ledger of what should be remembered. A broad-shouldered man with a hairline of flame — a beard as vivid as a harvest field — stares straight out of the image eyes steady with stubborn warmth. Close by a figure with a beard like braided wood and a flannel of leaves woven through his hair seems to have stepped out of a forest his presence slower and more rooted.
