ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: GREEN ISLANDS
The world opens like a book beneath you: a wide glassy sea freckled with thousand tiny green islands each one a private stage of earth and stone. From this distance they look like the spilled pieces of a gardener’s dream — lawns and groves a handful of clustered cottages a lone tower here and there — hovering above the water as if the tide had decided to carry light and land instead of only foam. The islands drift at different heights some close to the waves others lofted high enough that their undersides are exposed: rough root-like rock curtains that curl and crumble into the mist. At the center of the sky impossible and deliberate hangs a giant square — a bold modern sigil hung like a tapestry against the puffs of cloud. It is not a natural formation but a crafted thing a mural of color and geometry a grid of rectangles and circles balanced with the cool precision of a jewel. Blocks of vivid red sunlit yellow ocean blue and dusky magenta play against one another within them circles and crescents suggest moons and suns or perhaps punctuation marks in a language that reads in shapes. Some panes hold tiny dots others open arcs. From a distance the square looks like a celestial map and up close it is a language you almost remember — symbols that insist they mean something that unlock some pattern of skies and currents. Two large floating islets flank the square like guardians. To the left a compact plateau carries cottages and a red-roofed tower its shadow falling across the face of the mural. To the right a grander promontory rises crowned with a citadel of spires and flagpoles a small city bristling with windows and terraces that look out over the sea of islands. The castle’s battlements and the mural share the sky — neither subordinate to the other — as if the painting is both ornament and ordinance marking this archipelago with an architect’s eye. Down below the smaller islands tell a thousand gentle stories. A market town sits snug on one its orange-tiled roofs a cluster of warmth another hosts a single solitary chapel whose steeple points like a question. Little causeways of clouds connect several islands thin bridges of vapor that the wind teases into ribbons. The water between them is placid and deep reflecting the colors above as if the sea is painting with the same palette. Light breaks through the clouds in scattered shafts gilding certain isles and leaving others in emerald shadow. Birds wheel and scatter like punctuation marks themselves and here and there a boat — tiny as a matchbox from this height — cuts through the blue leaving a white seam in its wake. The air smells of salt and wet stone and green things it hums with the click and murmur of distant life: bells from the citadel the bark of an unseen dog the murmur of voices that rise and fall as if in argument about directions on a map that no one quite knows how to read. The composition feels deliberate a staged balance between geometry and living things. The mural’s rigid squares insist on meaning while the islands and castles insist on story. It is easy to imagine a pilgrim standing on one of those spires finger tracing a circle on the painted square searching for the island whose color corresponds to their fate. Or a cartographer furrowed and delighted mapping each symbol to a harbor each crescent to a tide. Here art and atlas have braided themselves together: the painted panel a riddle the islands its answers and the sea the patient scribe rolling the tale forward. Look longer and the small human-scale details start to take you in — a garden terrace with a single bench a line of drying cloths strung between poles tiny gardens terraced like patchwork quilts. Each accretion of life feels like a sentence together they form a continent of stories suspended between earth and sky all orbiting that radiant square which promises direction decree or destiny. You can almost hear the turning of its pages slow and deliberate as the floating world turns with it waiting for the next hand to lift and read.
