ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: PATCHWORK OF RECTANGLES
A bright impossible afternoon opens across the canvas like a map folded into a thousand small stories. Above it all the sky is a wide untroubled blue studded with pillowy white clouds and a polite distant moon. Along the far horizon a thin city silhouette anchors the scene a reminder of ordinary scale beneath this subtle magic. But the real country here is not continuous land at all — it is a patchwork of colored rectangles stacked and staggered like the rooms of a dream-house or a book of miniatures each square a window on a different moment. Dominating the composition is a tall warm monolith of oranges and reds a column that pulses with an inner sun. Inside its glowing heart a lone white horse stands as if lit from within silent and watchful a sentinel that turns the whole piece into a kind of temple. Around that column the tiles arrange themselves into landscapes: a blue pool with a small sailboat a green sward where a single tree leans as if listening ochre fields where miniature clouds drift low and soft. Clouds are not confined to the sky here — they leak into individual rectangles sometimes sitting like thought-bubbles in a meadow sometimes bisecting a tile and turning a pastoral into the edge of a dream. Tiny figures and animals populate the squares like curators of memory. A pair of deer graze beneath a purple tree in the foreground casually luminous against a deep green a horse or two stand aloof on terraces of color a small white bird bursts free out of a blue rectangle as if it has just decided to leave its painted cage. A lighthouse gleams on a distant tile a ring-bubble holds a little green world and an airplane no bigger than a fingertip slices across two or three blocks like a punctuation mark. The variety is generous and mysterious: rocky outcrops in one panel a strip of orchard in another a cloud reflected perfectly in a tiny lake. There is a sense of movement that keeps the eye walking. The rectangles are like chapters you can step into: climb the warm tower and the sun becomes a doorway follow a band of cool blue and you find a shore with a sailboat and the hush of open water turn into a patch of purple and there are gentle beasts grazing as if time had been slowed down to study them. Colors themselves are characters — the welcoming ochres the secretive greens the reassuring blues — and they converse at the seams where two tiles meet suggesting paths that might be taken but never quite completed. Despite the geometry the scene never feels rigid. Clouds drift through squares creatures cross color-block borders and the sky above mirrors and mocks the smaller skies below. The painting behaves like a ledger of quiet miracles: each tile is a memory preserved an echo of everyday wonder magnified until it becomes story. It invites you to invent a reason for the horse in the sun to decide whether the little boat is arriving or leaving to wonder if the deer beneath the purple tree have been there for hours or forever. In the end you are left with the sensation of having walked through a town built of moments — some ordinary some surreal — where light is exacting and generous where animals keep their secrets with patient indifference and where every rectangle holds the possibility of another page turned.
