ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: ARCHITECTURE AND ANIMALITY
The scene opens like a fever-dream map laid out under a cobalt sky. Everything sits on a flat carpet of impossible bruise-red earth: houses trees stripped to their skeletons hunched figures and enormous slow-moving animals. The sun — if you can call it that — is a staring eyelike orb rimmed with lashes of cloud it watches the tableau below with a clinical patient curiosity. Wisps of white vapor rise in thin columns from the distance and a pale needle-shaped tower thrusts up like a compass point marking where industry and absurdity meet on the horizon. You wander first past the small dwellings their roofs tiled and familiar yet oddly out of scale as though a child had rearranged a village inside a nightmare. Beside one cottage a swollen pachyderm form pads across the blood-red plain oversized and patient its body a study in bulk and quiet inevitability. Nearby a cluster of people — some small as chessmen some life-sized — stand or crouch their gestures caught mid-ritual: a handshake a bow an embrace turned statue. One pair is frozen in an intimate supplication stone-smooth and mournful while beneath them a grotesque half-human creature curls around a spherical globe as if protecting or devouring it. The ground itself is a theater of contrast. Pits of glossy black open like wells or stage-traps from their depths sprout tiny tableaux of their own — a child leaning over the rim a man with a fish the stub of a tree. In one hollow a monkey-sized figure balances on all fours face turned toward you with an expression that mixes suffering and mischief. Around these dark craters the red soil is littered with oddments: a shell the size of a house a mammoth ammonite spiraled into fossilized sleep and an overturned chair that holds a head like a theatrical prop. Scattered through the midground are the fantastic and the failed experiments of a mad architect’s mind. A squat fortress-like building stands with a door that seems to open onto nothing at all a ladder leans against a stump that supports a fragile stool and a precarious living tree. Balloons — not carefree but bulbous and matte — float tethered to stakes or rise untethered carrying within them tiny passengers who peer down at the absurdity below. A giraffe or camel elongated and emaciated strides across the scrub its long neck cutting the blue like a question mark. The human figures are both ordinary and warped. Some are diminutive passing like ants between the monumental curiosities others look like statues come to life — lovers mourners priests — their faces smudged with sorrow and bemusement. At times anatomy fails and becomes allegory: a man with a fish for a head a woman sprouting a shell instead of a child a procession of beings holding miniature planets as if offering them in a bizarre liturgy. There is no single point of focus instead your eye is tugged from vignette to vignette each promising a revelation and delivering only another mystery. Trees stand leafless and red as iron their branches webbed against the sky like the ribs of the landscape. On one branch perches a monstrous insect or bird its silhouette both prehistoric and comically modern. In the far distance tiny silhouettes cluster along a skyline of chimneys and towers clinging to the notion of civilization that seems both far away and laughably present. The whole place feels ancient and brand-new at once regenerated into an apocalyptic carnival. As you move through the picture you begin to hear its silence: the creak of a statue shifting the muffled drip from a black pool the whisper of a balloon as it rubs its neighbors. The painting insists on simultaneity — life and fossil worship and parody architecture and animality — folding time into a single breathless instant. It leaves you with the sense that you have wandered into a world made by the leftovers of other worlds where every object is a talisman and every creature a story half-remembered. You step back and the eye in the sky blinks once as if to record your departure before turning its attention to another corner of its endless red plain.
