ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FORGOTTEN THEATER
The clearing opens like the stage of a long-forgotten theater. At its center a creature with the solemn ears of a rabbit and the pudgy bulk of a child sits cross-legged on a rough-hewn stump hands folded over its lap as if waiting for a bell that never rings. Its glassy eyes catch the pale bruised light and hold it there is something patient and weary behind them as though it has been holding a story all night and cannot remember the beginning. Around its neck a faint collar of fur is ruffled and the downcast mouth suggests it has practiced silence until silence became a posture. To its right stands a thin elongated figure almost like a scarecrow made of thought — ribs and neck exaggerated into a single vertical question. This being’s skin is the color of old parchment spikes or soft quills crown its skull. It leans slightly toward the rabbit-child an expression of curious sympathy on a face carved too small for comfort. Between them a tiny procession of other beings drifts and clusters: a hopping twisted little thing with a trunk-like snout a childlike humanoid with disproportionately long fingers a pig curled in the grass nostrils twitching exhaling slow herbal breaths that smell of damp earth and ferment. Behind them a tower rises — not elegant but agglomerative: stacks of rooms windows and ladders nailed together like a vertical village. Small doors open like mouths at each threshold a miniature life spills out — a head peering a foot swinging a candle guttering. Trees flank the tower their trunks studded with shelves and uncanny totems: a mask here a bulbous gourd there a carved humanoid face that stares with wooden patience. Swinging from a branch a tiny figure dangles by the hands its legs kicked back as if mid-laugh yet the mood here is complex a mixture of lullaby and afterthought. Scattered through the scene are curious artifacts — a glass jar connected by tubing to a small brass contraption a stone head placed like a garden ornament with a sapling sprouting from its ear tiny painted signs nailed to bark. A child-sized statue with its own expressionless face sits in the shadows a crown of twigs perched on one side as though it were both ruler and subject of its own small court. Someone — perhaps the rabbit-boy perhaps the tower itself — left a candle alight on a wooden plinth its flame trembles and casts reaching shadows that crawl like stories across the moss. There is motion in the stillness: a small pair of legs dashes from behind a stump a hand reaches up to ring some unseen bell and a droplet of afternoon mist slides slow and deliberate down a branch. Conversations if there are any are made of the soft rustle of clothing and the faint squeal of a wheel turning somewhere within the tower. The creatures do not rush time here has folded into itself so often it has learned new manners. Each face each carved ornament holds a private shorthand of memory — a tangle of grief mischief and the stubborn comfort of habit. You could imagine a hundred different evenings among them: a forgotten festival in which everyone wears borrowed heads a procession led by the rabbit-child who when it stands carries a lantern full of names or a quieter story in which the thin figure murmurs the old geography of the place and the pig listens until it drifts to sleep. The scene resists a single explanation. Instead it gives you fragments — the look of someone who remembers rain as sound a tower that keeps secrets in its lintels a community held together by small patient rituals — and leaves you standing on the lip of something both uncanny and utterly lived-in compelled to turn the page and step closer.
