The scene opens like the first line of a strange fable: a wind-scoured plain under a sky the color of old pewter and at its center a towering contraption that seems to have been dreamt up by an astronomer and a clockmaker. At first glance it is sculpture—brilliant impossible metal—yet every curve and rod implies motion a suggestion that if you listened long enough the brass would begin to tick and the polished crescents would orbit. Polished concentric rings form the heart of the piece a spiraled aperture at the core like the eye of a machine or the sun punched through a lens. From that core radiate slender rods tipped with spheres and counterweights half-discs and triangular vanes that catch light and shadow like the blades of a cosmic windmill. Surfaces alternate between burnished gold and matte bronze edges throw thin hard highlights that map the sculpture’s geometry as if drawing a constellation in metal. Some elements hang suspended on thin axles poised to rotate: small cymbal-like disks shallow spherical nodes and triangular sails that tilt as if balanced to respond to the slightest breath of air. The assembly reads as an orrery—a mechanical model of a system—each arm a path each mass a planet.
