ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: JAGGED ICE
The story opens on a world made of winter and light. A pale crystalline plain stretches to every horizon its surface rough with frozen ridges and soft mounds of snow. The ground is not a smooth sheet but a broken sea as if waves had been arrested mid–swell and turned to ice in an instant. In the distance jagged mountains rise sculpted into strangely graceful shapes more like eroded statues than natural peaks. They glow faintly cyan echoing the turquoise of the sky. At the center of this frozen stage stands something impossible: a cluster of tall glasslike pillars perfectly vertical translucent and immaculate. They are like giant icicles sharpened into columns or the remnants of a lost temple whose walls have melted away leaving only the bones of architecture behind. Their surfaces catch and bend the light blurring the boundary between sky and ice. Above them hangs a vast flawless sphere—an enormous white sun or moon too close to the ground to be real. It seems to rest directly on the tips of the pillars as though they are holding up the sky. Around its edges clouds erupt and coil not drifting lazily but bursting outward like frozen steam: cottony plumes suspended in mid-explosion. Some of these clouds seem to spill downward draping the pillars and crowning them with frosted halos. Near the middle of the composition slightly off-center something dark interrupts the purity of white and blue: a lone bird or winged creature caught in mid-flight between the pillars. Its wings are spread wide as it passes through this monumental gateway. In this near-silent world its motion is the only clear sign of life a streak of defiance carved into the stillness. The sky itself is a luminous turquoise gradient deepening as it rises almost liquid in color. Wispy streaks of cloud slash across it but they look stylized like brushstrokes on a painting rather than weather. As your gaze returns to the ground you notice how the scattered snow formations echo the shape of the clouds above as if the heavens and the earth are mirroring each other: clouds that want to be mountains mountains that want to be clouds. Narratively it feels like the moment a traveler reaches the threshold of a sacred place. The pillars become a gate the sphere an artificial sun engineered by some vanished civilization and the bird a guide or witness. This could be the last remnant of a forgotten temple of the sky an observatory built not to look up at the cosmos but to bring a piece of it down to the surface.
