ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: MEMORY POOL
A city opens like a dream in mid-sentence. At the left edge a small boy stands on a ledge above an empty swimming pool. His hair bristles like black needles his eyes wide and heavy with something older than childhood. In both hands he grips a black?and?white portrait of another boy—same age similar face but frozen in a serious almost official pose. It feels like a wanted poster or perhaps a missing?child notice yet the boy holding it seems unsure whether he is the witness or the one who has disappeared. Behind him a wall riots with graffiti. Letters symbols rough faces and fragments of words climb over one another as if a whole neighborhood tried to shout at once and ended up layered in paint. A tattered net hangs there catching nothing: a broken promise of safety or play. Nearby sunflowers blaze up along the edges of the scene their bright heads turned toward a sky that looks both hopeful and ominous. That sky is crowded. Red and blue polka?dotted balloons float upward cheerful and out of place like forgotten fragments of a birthday party. Higher still a tangle of pinkish clouds curls into a shape disturbingly close to a human brain pulsing above the city. It’s as though the entire landscape is happening inside someone’s thoughts—memories drifting as balloons worries congealing into that heavy storm?colored mind. The city itself stretches in the background: blocky high?rises and broken silhouettes. Some windows glint others are dark wounds. It’s not a clean skyline but a collage of structures as though pieces of different cities have been patched together into one unsure horizon. In the center the pool waits. No water just a glassy surface lined with portraits beneath like tiles. Faces look up from the floor—men women children—each sealed into their own rectangle. Some appear serious others smiling but all of them are trapped in this transparent graveyard of identities. Walking around the pool would be like walking around a submerged family album or a memorial. The surrounding corridor of mirrored walls multiplies everything: silhouettes of running children painted in black repeat endlessly. These shadow figures caught mid?stride never arrive anywhere. Their reflections turn the space into a hall of memories where every motion is echoed but never completed. The mirrors also fracture the graffiti and the sunflowers into countless shards hinting that no single view of this place can be whole. On the ground near the sunflowers red circles pop like oversized confetti against a white path echoing the balloons overhead. They lead the eye along the edge of the pool and toward porcelain vases stamped with blue designs. These vases delicate and traditional sit uneasily in the wildness of spray paint and concrete like relics of an older more orderly culture set down in a restless modern alley. Symbolically the scene reads like a meditation on memory identity and lost childhood. The boy holding the portrait suggests questions of who we are versus who we are told we are—official photos documents imposed identities. The portraits under the pool’s surface resemble victims or ancestors hinting at people erased or drowned by history yet still visible if you lean close enough. The graffiti stands for raw living expression the porcelain and sunflowers for continuity and beauty that somehow endure. And overhead that brain?shaped cloud turns the entire urban landscape into a mental one: this could be a city of thoughts where every wall is a diary and every face a memory pressed under glass. The image works like a story paused at a threshold: a child on the edge of a memory?pool a city full of ghosts and reflections behind him and above the mind itself churning trying to hold all of this together without letting any of it sink completely from view.
