A.P.Polo - "Don Quijote" - Hamburg (Germany) Don Quijote is the common name for the Spanish-language novel El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes, translated as The Ingenious Squire Don Quixote of La Mancha; it is also the name of the protagonist. The first part was published in 1605, the second in 1615 under the title Segunda parte del ingenioso caballero don Quixote de la Mancha. Don Quixote is a reader addicted to his chivalric novels who seems unable to distinguish between fiction and reality. He believes himself to be a proud knight-errant who wants to win over his beloved Dulcinea del Toboso. To this end, he mounts his rickety horse Rosinante and embarks on numerous adventures, accompanied by his faithful squire Sancho Panza (also: Sancho Pansa). The episodes usually end with Don Quixote being beaten up by rough opponents, but winning against the innocent with little glory as the "Knight of the Sad Countenance". On his escape from the alarmed order of knights, he seeks refuge in the Sierra Morena and meets the lovesick penitent Cardenio, who has lost his beloved Lucinda to his best friend Fernando. Through a messenger service, Panza reaches the priest and the barber, who hatch a plan to rescue his master; Dorothea is passed off as Princess Micomicona, who is dependent on Don Quijote's help. The young people manage to reconcile with each other completely. Don Quixote is finally transported home in a wooden cage. In the second part, published in 1615, the country nobleman Don Quixote has become a literary celebrity and embarks on new adventures with Panza, first voluntarily and later as the guest of a ducal couple who enjoy the madness of the supposed knight and his squire. Don Quixote, who searches in vain for his Dulcinea, returns to his village as a defeated knight after a duel. There, the terminally ill man recognises his mistake and dies. In the 18th century, the Scottish philosopher David Hume analysed the novel. In the 19th century, the philosophers Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Schlegel, poets such as Ludwig Tieck and Heinrich Heine, and in the 20th century José Ortega y Gasset, Miguel de Unamuno and Ernst Bloch. Aesthetic questions focus on compositional technique, the comic, the drawing of figures and poetological discourse. Since the 20th century, modern narrative techniques such as self-referentiality, pastiche, genre diversity and metafiction, which Cervantes used masterfully, have come to the fore. Historical works turn to the novel as a place of Spanish memory, transformation and the self-presentation and self-explanation of a nation. Cervantes' magnum opus, the most famous work of Spanish literature, is considered the first modern novel and one of the most important works of world literature.
