Illustration for the cover of Dagoberto Gilb's New Testaments, published City Lights Books, San Francisco. ** Gilb is considered a contemporary legend of Chicanx literature. He’s a Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellow, the author of nine books, and his stories have appeared in The New Yorker and Harper's Magazine. ** My challenge was to convey the gritty Southwest of his working-class Mexican America without falling into sepia-toned desert cliché. So the colors are intense and vibrant. The lines are straight, the shapes are flat, and the angles are hard, but there’s motion. The harsh sun is in the crisp crisscross of the shadows, and the emptiness of the open sky. A utility pole emphasizes the treeless landscape but also sanctifies the humble house. And there’s a flash of life in the curving lines of a bright pink bicycle. It’s desolate, but not vacant. There are people here. ** “Gilb’s familiar signature intimacy brings us face to face with marginal housing, gritty and exhausting jobs, street people, sex, earthquakes, fouled air, physical handicaps, racism. . . .
