ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: INNER CITY CIPHER
The vibrant and ever-changing street art of the inner city in Cape Town often served as a source of inspiration for Aisha, a digital artist fascinated by the visual language of urban spaces. Her latest piece felt like a direct translation of the layered textures and hidden messages she encountered daily on her walks through the CBD. The artwork presented a fragmented and abstract portrait, a face pieced together from bold black outlines and filled with a riot of vibrant colors. Teal and turquoise dominated the central features, giving the face an almost masked or otherworldly appearance. Bursts of red, yellow, and blue punctuated the composition, adding to the sense of dynamic energy. Overlaid on the abstract portrait were layers of graphic elements – snippets of text in various styles, abstract symbols, and illegible scribbles. These elements seemed to float and intersect across the canvas, creating a dense and visually complex surface. Some of the text appeared to be reversed or partially obscured, hinting at hidden meanings or coded messages often found in street art.
