The first time Ryoichi Kurogane laid eyes on Aika Takamura, she was a rising star in Japanese politics, an ambitious young official working her way through the ranks of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. He had been assigned to her security detail, a role he accepted without question, as he always did. Duty came first. It always had, and it always would. At least, that was what he told himself. Aika had met many security officers before Ryoichi, but there was something about him that set him apart. He was silent but never absent, vigilant yet never invasive. His presence was as steady as the sunrise, and for someone in her position, that was invaluable. Over the years, she grew to rely on him, trust him completely, and eventually, that trust became something deeper. Though she never admitted it, there were moments when she looked at Ryoichi and wondered if he had ever allowed himself the luxury of companionship beyond his professional obligations. For twelve years, over two separate assignments, Ryoichi was at her side. He pulled her from danger more times than she could count—dodging political threats, violent protests, and even one particularly bold assassination attempt. The day of that attempt was seared into her memory. It had been an autumn evening in Tokyo, and Aika had just exited a high-profile diplomatic event at the Imperial Hotel. As she descended the steps, a figure emerged from the shadows with a concealed blade. The movement was swift, calculated—but Ryoichi was faster. With a fluid motion, he stepped between her and the assailant, disarming the attacker with precision that left the crowd stunned. She had heard the crack of bone, the sharp intake of breath as the would-be assassin crumpled to the pavement. But more than anything, she remembered the firm grip of Ryoichi’s hand on her arm as he shielded her, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter with a cool intensity. “You’re safe,” he had murmured, his voice steady despite the chaos unfolding around them. From that day forward, she never questioned his ability to protect her. But it wasn’t just his skill that fascinated her—it was his unwavering discipline. He never faltered, never hesitated, and most importantly, he never crossed the line of professionalism. His unwavering discipline fascinated and, at times, frustrated her. It wasn’t until a government retreat at a highly secure resort, much like the American Camp David, that Aika caught a glimpse of something she never expected from Ryoichi. Late one evening, she stumbled upon him and his fellow security officers laughing, telling stories, and singing traditional Japanese songs of duty, honor, and glory. For the first time, she saw him truly relaxed, engaged, and even joyful. The sight of it stunned her. This man, who had been her unwavering guardian for years, had a side she had never seen. It moved something deep within her, something she didn’t quite understand at the time. She kept this realization to herself but began to notice him more keenly. After that night, she found herself acting more playfully around him, testing the boundaries of his stoicism. She wanted to see that side of him again. Yet, to her dismay, Ryoichi never let his guard down in her presence. He remained the ever-professional protector, his mask unshaken, his resolve unbroken. Then, one night, after a particularly stressful diplomatic function, Aika drank too much. It was an uncharacteristic lapse in judgment, and as she stumbled near a hotel staircase, it was Ryoichi who caught her before she could fall. He steadied her, his hands firm but gentle, his voice calm and measured as he reminded her of the people present at the hotel. She listened to him, allowed him to guide her back to her room. As he secured the space and turned to leave, she surprised him. “Stay with me,” she whispered. He was not shocked. His training had prepared him for moments like this. He knew exactly how to handle it—without humiliation, without upset. He declined with precision and care, ensuring she did not feel embarrassed. The next day, their working relationship remained unchanged. He included the incident in his confidential report, as protocol demanded, and his superiors reviewed it with him. They came to a mutual agreement: when his current tour with Aika ended, he would receive a lateral reassignment, one that turned out to be a significant promotion. Four years later, Ryoichi left the Keishich? K?an Tokumu-bu and started his own private security firm. The transition was seamless, and for a time, he thought little of his past assignments. Until, several years later, at an international security conference, he ran into Aika. She was no longer with the Japanese government. Instead, she had become a highly regarded professor of international affairs at one of Japan’s most influential universities. Though years had passed, their bond of trust remained unshaken. But Aika noticed something different about him—he was more relaxed, more open. There was a warmth to him she had never seen before. They talked for hours, laughing and sharing drinks, reminiscing about the past. This time, when the night grew late, she did not ask him to stay. And this time, he asked if he could call her sometime. She smiled sincerely. “Yes.” His response—a smile of his own, one she had never seen before—warmed her heart. Neither of them had ever married. Neither of them had children, though they had nieces and nephews they loved dearly. Perhaps it was fate. Perhaps it was duty that had kept them apart.
