Welcome to my eclectic gallery! Spend a few moments to explore and consider the images. Author – Photography – Travel My birthplace is Bondi, Australia - my home is wherever I am in the world. A dear friend once told me, ‘Travel and leave a legacy in life’ and so I do. My books, photography and projects are intertwined, they inspire each other and take me to fascinating places - from the vast Outback of Australia to the soaring cliffs of Ireland. With a curious mind and loving diversity in my life, I'm mostly traveling ‘on the road’ capturing images of places and subjects from my surrounds, as well as finding inspiring new projects to work on. Most recently, my three-year project to locate, hear and record stories from people who were the last generation who carved the foundation of modern Australia with their bare hands. To understand what it took to build a nation and learn about the people, our identity and heritage. Producing a book titled: 'Hands that Created Our Heritage'. Capturing my county’s incredible raw beauty with my trusty, well used camera, often hiking in remote places - allows me to understand the essence of our landscape more intimately. Australian Tree Bark Series by Lexa Harpell. Aussie Gum Tree Bark – New South Wales, Australia Contemporary tree bark print – Home Decor. *A staggering 24,000 species of Australian native plants have been identified with around 800 being native Gum trees (eucalypts). Australia’s uniqueness comes its geography to the rest of the world. Originating some 50million years ago after the separation of Gondwana. Adapting to fire from their seeds as the land became dry and arid in most areas. Some common types of bark include: Stringybark – large ‘spongy strings’ of bark peel off the trunk. Ironbark – impregnated with Kino (sap) produces rich deep red to black colours. Rough and deeply furrowed. Box – Short box like fibres of bark. Tessellated – distinctive flakes that can be broken off. Ribbon – peels off in long, thin pieces. Scribbly gum – zig zag tracks are the tunnels of the larve from the scribbly gum moth. Types of gum trees include: Rainbow – Ghost – Scribbly – Blue – the long list goes on. Enjoy the uniqueness of these barks nature has to offer and have a close up look at the beauty of bark in your part of the world.
