Welcome to my eclectic gallery! Spend a few moments to explore and consider the images. Author – Photography – Travel My birthplace is Bondi, Australia - my home is wherever I am in the world. A dear friend once told me, ‘Travel and leave a legacy in life’ and so I do. My books, photography and projects are intertwined, they inspire each other and take me to fascinating places - from the vast Outback of Australia to the soaring cliffs of Ireland. With a curious mind and loving diversity in my life, I'm mostly traveling ‘on the road’ capturing images of places and subjects from my surrounds, as well as finding inspiring new projects to work on. Most recently, my three-year project to locate, hear and record stories from people who were the last generation who carved the foundation of modern Australia with their bare hands. To understand what it took to build a nation and learn about the people, our identity and heritage. Producing a book titled: 'Hands that Created Our Heritage'. Capturing my county’s incredible raw beauty with my trusty, well used camera, often hiking in remote places - allows me to understand the essence of our landscape more intimately. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FIRST LIGHT - ULURU AUSTRALIA
Raw and Untouched Northern Territory Series by Lexa Harpell. Uluru is probably the most photographed rock and the most recognisable natural landmark in Australia. *One of only 25 World Heritage Listed sites - listed for both its natural and cultural significance to humanity in 1987 - UNESCO. The fascination to the rock is for the ever changing colours with the sun and weather. Hoards of people gather to photograph its incredible sunsets from this vantage point. The colours change from vivid orange to purple hues with in moments as the sun sets. I took the advantage of capturing the first light devoid of people. Named Ayes Rock by early explorers - the traditional landowners called it Uluru. We now have a dual name for this rock. This monolith sits almost in the middle of Australia in the Northern Territory - rising 1,142 feet above the desert floor - with a circumference of 9.4 km - measures 3.6 km long and 2.4 km wide. Another 2.5kms of the rock sits underground! It seemingly appears from the middle of nowhere, surrounded by flat desert floor. Kata Tjuta (another incredible rock formation) lies about 50kms from Uluru. Uluru is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area. The area around the formation is home to an abundance of springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings. Uluru is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Uluru and Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas, are the two major features of the Ulu?u-Kata Tju?a National Park.* wikipedia... The surface oxidisation creates a bright orange appearance due to the high iron content in the rock. Originally, the rock was formed with horizontal layers of fine sand around 600million years ago. During this period the earth folded creating mountains - the sandstone layers now sit almost vertically. So it had been pushed on its side- of sorts
