Connie D. Phillips lives in the Choctaw Nation Reservation in southeast Oklahoma. The mountains, trees, and rivers of her homeland and the culture history of the Choctaw people have shaped her artistic vision, creating a tapestry of natural beauty and cultural resilience that defines her oeuvre. Connie's art is a tribute to the strength and enduring love of Choctaw women, reflecting the qualities that sustained her grandmothers through their lives. Women occupy a central role in her artwork, and she tries to recreate their inherent qualities through an evolving, looser, and more abstract style. This abstraction allows her to capture emotions more than precise forms, articulating the intangible qualities of her subjects—their resilience, grace, and love. Her creative journey began at a young age, driven by an intrinsic passion for art. Her artistic practice spans a variety of mediums, including ceramics, leather, photography, acrylics, pastels, and watercolor. Still, she feels most at home with oil painting, where she can explore depth and complexity with transparent layers. The artist also likes to add ultra-thin layers of 24k gold, copper, and sterling silver to her work. Notable influences in her work include the majestic rivers and mountains of southeast Oklahoma and the history of her native ancestors.
