ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: FIREFALL-YOSEMITE
I took a trip to Yosemite on Monday February 22 2016 to witness what I had only heard about from other photographers and seen on media. Leaving at 6am to make sure that I had plenty of time I found that when I got there at 10:30am it was almost too late to get a prime shooting spot. I arrived on the South side of the river driving up to a row of cars already parked on the side of the road. I got out and found that this was one of several location where the falls could be seen. So I claimed my spot by plunking down my tripod and chair then spent the rest of the day mingling with fellow photographer and tourists. Afterall I had about 7 hours to wait for the phenomena called Firefall to occur. There were about 50 photographer there when I arrived and over 200 by the time Firefalls turned its beautiful shaded of yellow orange and magenta. Several photographers were form the Sacramento area but I also spoke to some who had driven up from Southern California just for this event. One gentleman had driven from Los Angeles to Yosemite watched the Firefall event and was headed back home that night. To witness this natural occurring phenomena in person just sends chills up your spine considering each step that that Mother Nature had to provide to bring this all together. I cannot wait until next year to hopefully capture this magnificent happening again and being able to capture at a variety of several locations. The natural Firefall is one of Yosemite’s most amazing spectacles. Around the second week of February the setting sun hits Horsetail Fall at just the right angle to illuminate the upper reaches of the waterfall. And when conditions are perfect Horsetail Fall glows orange and red at sunset. Each year in late February hundreds of spectators gather in Yosemite to witness this amazing event. But the Yosemite Firefall can be finicky. Although Horsetail Fall is visible from multiple viewpoints in Yosemite Valley several factors must converge to trigger the Firefall. If conditions are not perfect the Yosemite Firefall will not glow. First and foremost Horsetail Fall must be flowing. If there’s not enough snowpack in February there will not be enough snowmelt to feed the waterfall which tumbles 1570 feet 480 meters down the east face of El Capitan. Likewise temperatures must be warm enough during the day to melt the snowpack. If temperatures are too cold the snow will stay frozen and Horsetail Fall won’t flow. Lack of runoff is also why there is no Firefall in autumn. Although the sun hits Yosemite Valley at the same angle in October as it does in February Horsetail Falls is usually dry in October because the runoff that feeds it has long since dried up. Second the western sky must be clear at sunset. If it’s snowing raining or even just cloudy the sun’s rays will be blocked and Horsetail Falls will not light up. Winter weather can be highly variable in Yosemite however and days that start off cloudy can clear up by sunset. If everything comes together and conditions are just right the Yosemite Firefall will light up for about ten minutes. To see Horsetail Fall glowing blood red is an almost supernatural experience.
