What is good art? The perceived value of any artwork rests with the person experiencing it. Most importantly is that whatever form of art it may be, it reflects the intent of the creator. The motivation behind the art is at the very heart of the question, what is good art? The answer is deceptively simple yet exceedingly complex. It is whatever the the artist desires it to be. The application of AI in art raises questions. It should. New art forms and mediums of expression always raise questions as they emerge from obscurity into the light. One thing is clear. AI has opened a universe of possibility. As I peer over the edge of the AI abyss, staring intently at the mash up on my computer screen, I conjure from what already exists the promise of something uniquely new, often unexpected, and occasionally delightful. There is much work yet to be done. Yes, it is deceptively simple yet exceedingly complex. I began my journey as a traditional photographer. By traditional I mean film, paper, chemicals and the mysteries of alchemy. I have fond memories of peering into a dimly lit tray of liquid and witnessing an image taking shape from out of the darkness. An image that was captured with a scientific recording device whose singular purpose is the measurement of photons traversing time and space. To practice holding them captive in darkness, until beckoned forth into another place in time was, and remains, pure magic to me. What a wondrous experience that was then and still is today. What a wondrous time I'm having revisiting those feelings now, with a brand new set of tools. As we sort out what is good and bad about AI art and digital creativity I invite you to accompany me on this exciting journey of discovery. I believe we each are destined to uncover what possibilities that our unique capacity to create may bring to light. Humans are at their very best when fulfilling the desire to creatively share those things they cherish most. I welcome your eyes, your mind, your heart, and your comments as we cross this new abyss together. Each of these works began as a visual prompt, from a digital photographic image of my own capturing. They haven’t been borrowed or taken from other artist’s work. They are, as the legendary French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called them, "stolen moments" discovered and recorded as life has presented them to me. What I desire you to discover here is a feel for my passion for taking things a few steps further in the creative process, using the new tools of AI. I truly want you to feel these images, and intently see them, not simply look at them. This has been refered to by others as "seeing beyond seeing". I have named this emerging art form Pel Maché, which literally means to mash up of pixels. - MDD
