ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: CARTER MANSION IN NORTHEAST TN
The Carter Mansion in Northeast Tennessee was built circa 1775 on the banks of the Watauga River in what is now Elizabethton. It is the oldest frame house in the state. Originally the dwelling of pioneers John Carter and his son Landon, it holds historical significance as John Carter chaired the Watauga Association and both father and son played crucial roles in the Revolutionary War. Landon's influence is commemorated by Carter County's name, while Elizabethton pays homage to his wife, Elizabeth MacLin. This elegant mansion stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit of those who settled the area. In the late 1700s, the Watauga River region, now part of Northeast Tennessee, attracted a diverse array of pioneers primarily from European backgrounds like English, Scots-Irish, and German immigrants. These settlers sought fresh opportunities and lands on the American frontier. Challenges typical of frontier life, such as clashes with Native American tribes, adverse environmental conditions, and the necessity of establishing infrastructure like roads and forts for defense, were faced by the settlers along the river. Despite these obstacles, their resilience, ingenuity, and collaborative efforts allowed them to prosper and lay the groundwork for present-day communities in the region. In essence, these early settlers played a pivotal role in the westward expansion of the United States, contributing to the advancement and shaping of the frontier's history and culture.
