A.P.Polo - Fukushima - Hamburg-St.Georg (Germany) Photograph / Mixed Media / Digital Art Several long-term exposed photographs, which I took at night in the red-light district of Hamburg-St.Georg out of movement of the light from skyscrapers, served as a "light palette" for this digital painting, whereby I focused more on the "green light district" in this work. Fits perfectly into the offices of RWE & E.ON board members and is also very "popular" in my home districts of Brokdorf, Brunsbüttel & Stade..... A series of severe accidents at the Japanese nuclear power plant Fukushima Daiichi (Fukushima I) from 11 March 2011 onwards are described as a nuclear disaster at Fukushima. On the seven-stage INES scale (International Nuclear Event Scale), the disaster reached the highest level 7, which is the second largest nuclear accident to date after the "Ultimate-MCA" of Chernobyl. The series of accidents began on 11 March 2011 at 14:47 (local time) with the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami, both of which are considered to have triggered the disaster. It took its fateful course simultaneously in four out of six reactor blocks. Blocks 1, 2 and 3 suffered a meltdown. There were explosions in three reactor blocks and a fire in a cooling pond. Large quantities of radioactive material were released. When the caesium isotope Cs-137 was released, some sources reported 36 PBq Cs-137, which would be about 42% of the Cs-137 emission from Chernobyl. Other sources estimate 50 to 80 PBq, which would be about as much as Chernobyl. These estimates mainly concern air and soil contamination. There are no reliable studies yet on release into the Pacific Ocean. The total values are probably much higher. Approximately 170,000 inhabitants were evacuated from the affected areas, including about 20,000 on a voluntary basis. Research showed that among the resettled people, mental disorders were 5 times higher than the Japanese average. Among evacuated seniors, the mortality rate increased by a factor of 3 in the first three months after the accident and finally stagnated at 1.5 times the pre-disaster rate. Hundreds of thousands of animals left on farms died. The first official case of leukaemia in a worker directly caused by radiation was in 2015, and in early September 2018 the Japanese Ministry of Health recognised and compensated for a first death as a result of the reactor accident. It was a 50-year-old former employee who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016 and died in 2018. He was busy at least twice with radiation measurements at the scene of the accident shortly after the core meltdown, wearing respiratory protection and protective clothing. Previously, the Ministry had certified four other workers with radiation-related (but previously non-fatal) illnesses. In addition, the reactor accident had forced the evacuation of patients from a nearby hospital, 40 of whom may have died later due to relocation. The number of "direct" or "indirect" fatalities is assessed very differently depending on the interest group. According to the Swiss Nuclear Forum, there were no "radiation-related illnesses or even deaths" by 2017. A Japanese daily newspaper reports 1,232 deaths in 2015, none of which are directly attributable to the reactor accident, but which are suicides and consequences of the health effects of hard living in temporary shelters. Since 2011, children in Japan have been increasingly diagnosed with thyroid or thyroid cancer. A report published in March 2018 by the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War organization estimates that 194 cases of thyroid cancer in children have been confirmed to date. Throughout Fukushima, there was a significant increase in 2017 compared to the pre-disaster period, with statistically 13.4 cases of thyroid cancer per 100,000 children per year. "Remember, the usual incidence of childhood thyroid cancer in Japan before Fukushima was 0.35 cases per 100,000 children per year. (Quote from IPPNW Report March 2018) This means that thyroid cancer diagnoses in children in Fukushima have increased more than 38-fold. However, radio ecologist Georg Steinhauser comes to a completely different conclusion. There is no medical explanation why increased cases of thyroid cancer were measured just a few years after the release of the radioactivity, since the Chernobyl experience shows that this would take many times as much time. He explains this as an artefact of screening, in which in contrast to the previous statistics, cases are also listed which would not have been noticed without the screening because they remain symptom-free for a lifetime. A reliable prognosis regarding the increase in malignant thyroid carcinomas in children and adolescents is generally not yet possible. Nevertheless, an IPPNW report from 2016 estimates up to 66,000 additional cases of cancer among the total population in Japan as a result of the disaster. In 2017, doctor Alex Rosen reports documented cases in which Fukushima Medical University transfers affected children to other hospitals and thus excludes them from official statistics. Four out of six reactor units of the power plant were destroyed by the accidents. The two remaining units 5 and 6 are finally decommissioned by order of Prime Minister Abe. The disposal work is expected to take between 30 and 40 years. As of 2019, Tepco and the Japanese government expect the equivalent of approximately 200 billion dollars for the decommissioning, while the Japan Center for Economic Research expects the equivalent of 460 to 640 billion dollars. After the catastrophe, scepticism about the civilian use of nuclear energy increased. Several countries abandoned their nuclear energy programmes. In mid-September 2012, the Japanese government itself decided to phase out nuclear energy by 2040 at the latest, but after protests from the business community, it curtailed the phase-out again. Ultimately, this nuclear catastrophe meant that Japan was only without nuclear reactor operation for about two months, because after the last nuclear reactor shutdown at the beginning of May 2012, it put a reactor back into operation at the beginning of July of the same year.
