A.P.Polo - "Zoonose" - Hamburg (Germany). Zoonoses are infectious diseases that can be transmitted from animal to human and from human to animal and that occur naturally in vertebrates. The definition of the World Health Organisation (WHO) from 1959 states restrictively that zoonoses are infectious diseases that can be transmitted naturally between humans and other vertebrates. Originally, zoonoses were only understood to be animal diseases. During the 19th century, the meaning of the term changed. In addition to the actual animal diseases, in the mid-19th century zoonoses were now also understood to mean diseases that could be transmitted from animals to humans. In today's use of the term zoonosis, no distinction is made with regard to the route of transmission. Zoonoses can therefore be transmitted from humans to animals (anthropozoonosis) or from animals to humans (zooanthroponosis). There are currently around 200 known diseases that occur in both animals and humans and can be transmitted in both directions. The actual pathogens can be prions, viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths or arthropods. Major modern diseases such as Ebola virus disease and salmonellosis are zoonoses. HIV was a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans in the early part of the 20th century, though it has now evolved into a separate human-only disease. Most strains of influenza that infect humans are human diseases, although many strains of bird flu and swine flu are zoonoses; these viruses occasionally recombine with human strains of the flu and can cause pandemics such as the 1918 Spanish flu or the 2009 swine flu. Taenia solium infection is one of the neglected tropical diseases with public health and veterinary concern in endemic regions. Zoonoses can be caused by a range of disease pathogens such as emergent viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites; of 1,415 pathogens known to infect humans, 61% were zoonotic. Most human diseases originated in non-humans; however, only diseases that routinely involve non-human to human transmission, such as rabies, are considered direct zoonoses. Zoonoses have different modes of transmission. In direct zoonosis the disease is directly transmitted from non-humans to humans through media such as air (influenza) or through bites and saliva (rabies). In contrast, transmission can also occur via an intermediate species (referred to as a vector), which carry the disease pathogen without getting sick. AIDS, SARS and the resulting memories of the Spanish flu have increased interest in research into zoonoses. The European Union has initiated a Europe-wide network of 300 researchers called Med-Vet-Net, which is dedicated to the prevention and control of zoonoses. One focus of the network is campylobacterioses, infections of the digestive tract, e.g. Campylobacter jejuni, of which 100 bacterial strains have been identified to date. In 2003, the European Council and the European Parliament defined a list A of eight zoonoses that are continuously monitored. These include diseases caused by bacterial strains of the Campylobacter, Listeria, Salmonella, certain types of Escherichia coli or Mycobacterium bovis families, as well as trichinellosis and echinococcosis caused by parasites. Zoonoses have been defined in a list B, for which surveillance begins as soon as a case is identified. These include rabies, West Nile fever and avian influenza. The word "zoonoses" was used for the first time by Rudolf Virchow as a bracketed subtitle of the chapter "Infections caused by infectious animal poisons" in the Handbook of Special Pathology and Therapy, which he published in 1855.
