*Art, like life, should sparkle* Artist, fashion designer, belly dancer—Jayne Somogy, who signs her work "Somogyi" the ethnically-correct spelling of her Hungarian surname, creates graphic, stylized, Asian-inspired, & whimsical embellished/jeweled interpretations of people, ethnic subjects, animals, and still life. Jayne comes from the Midwest, graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.A. in Theater (musical theatre performance and costume design), and spent most of her adult life in Los Angeles. At age 40, while working full-time at night and raising a son by herself, she returned to school and earned a Professional Certificate–Summa Cum Laude in Fashion Design; one of her designs won second place in the 1987 "Suit of the Future" national design contest. Although she worked mostly in administrative jobs in law and publishing, she has studied/performed dance, music, acting, drawing and design since childhood. In 2008 she moved to Conyers, Georgia, and began to focus on creating art. With a life-long love of the exotic, the soul of a gypsy, and an intense interest in indigenous populations and all the diverse characters of the Universe, her subject matter often reflects the peoples of the world and their history and customs, often done in a realistic yet whimsical style. To create dimension in her work, she sometimes adds fabric, apparel trim, feathers, jewelry, Swarovski rhinestones & beads, and paper collage. About her work, Jayne says, “I hope my sense of humor comes through in my work because . . . well, because life is just . . . FUNNY!”

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: DOUR DOWER
This is an historically accurate portrait of a Welsh housewife in Welsh national dress in 1885. I would love to know the history behind that rather odd hat, apparently worn indoors by all Welsh women at that time! The title is composed of two homonyms—dour, the word that means “relentlessly severe” or “gloomy” and dower, the word that means “that part of a deceased husband’s property that goes to the widow for her lifetime.” Doesn’t she look like a gloomy widow?
