The University of Oregon (UO) is a public research university located in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It was founded in 1876 as the state's flagship university and has since grown to become a leading institution of higher education in the Pacific Northwest. The university's history can be traced back to the founding of a private school in Eugene in 1856, which was known as the Eugene Academy. The school eventually evolved into the University of Oregon, with the passage of the Oregon State University Bill in 1872. The first classes were held in 1876, with an initial enrollment of just 155 students. During its early years, the university struggled financially, and it wasn't until the early 1900s that it began to experience significant growth. The university's expansion was fueled by a number of factors, including the establishment of several professional schools, an increase in research funding, and a growing reputation for academic excellence. In the 1920s and 1930s, the university continued to grow, with the addition of several new buildings and academic programs. During this time, the university also became known for its athletic programs, particularly its football team, which won its first Pacific Coast Conference championship in 1917. In the decades following World War II, the university continued to expand, with the construction of several new academic and research facilities. During this time, the university also became a leader in the field of environmental studies, with the establishment of the Institute of Ecology in 1969. Today, the University of Oregon is known for its strong programs in the arts and sciences, as well as its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The university is home to more than 23,000 students, and offers over 300 degree programs across a wide range of disciplines.
