A.P.Polo - "Vakzination" - Hamburg (Germany). The first primitive form of vaccination against viruses was practised in India from the 11th century and in the Chinese Song Dynasty. There, the scabs from the wounds of smallpox patients who had survived the disease were applied to small scratches or other wounds on healthy people. Today, the procedure is known as variolation. Later, the procedure was also used in Asia Minor. Mary Wortley Montagu, the wife of the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, observed it there and brought it to England in 1721. The risk of dying from variolation was 1 to 2 per cent. Compared to the mortality rate from a normal smallpox infection of 25 per cent to over 40 per cent in infants, this was a considerable improvement. There is evidence that people in Germany and England have been successfully immunised with cowpox lymph since 1774 (by Benjamin Jesty in 1774 and Peter Plett in 1791 respectively), when in 1796 Edward Jenner also used cowpox material to inoculate eight-year-old James Phipps against smallpox. This further reduced the mortality risk. In 1881, Louis Pasteur named this procedure 'Vakzination' in Jenner's honour (vaccination from the Latin vacca = cow). In 1882, the German Adolf Mayer in the Netherlands proved for the first time that a disease could be caused by a substance that could not be removed even by filtration and therefore had to be significantly smaller than bacteria. Under the light microscope, it was not bacteria that were visible, but the finest crystal needles. Dmitri Ivanovsky transmitted the mosaic disease in tobacco plants using ultra-filtered extract and thus detected the tobacco mosaic virus, which was later described, in 1892. The first detection of an animal virus was achieved in 1898 by Friedrich Loeffler and Paul Frosch, who discovered the foot-and-mouth disease virus. It was not until around 1940 that viruses could be visualised with the development of the electron microscope. The history of virology - the scientific study of viruses and the infections they cause - began in the last years of the 19th century. Although Louis Pasteur and Edward Jenner developed the first vaccines to protect against viral infections, they did not know that viruses existed. The first proof of the existence of viruses came from experiments with filters whose pores were small enough to retain bacteria. In 1892, Dmitry Ivanovsky used one of these filters to show that the sap of a diseased tobacco plant could infect healthy tobacco plants even though it had been filtered. Martinus Beijerinck labelled the filtered, infectious substance a "virus". This discovery is considered the beginning of virology. The subsequent discovery and partial characterisation of bacteriophages by Frederick Twort and Felix d'Herelle further catalysed the field. Many viruses were discovered in the early 20th century. In 1926, Thomas Milton Rivers defined viruses as obligate parasites. According to Wendell Meredith Stanley, viruses proved to be particles and not liquids, and the invention of the electron microscope in 1931 made it possible to visualise their complex structures. Despite his other successes, Louis Pasteur did not succeed in finding a rabies pathogen. He suspected a pathogen that was too small to be recognised with a microscope. In 1884, the French microbiologist Charles Chamberland invented a filter - known today as a Chamberland filter - with pores smaller than bacteria. This enabled him to filter a solution containing bacteria and completely remove the bacteria from the solution. By 1928, enough was known about viruses to allow the publication of Filterable Viruses, a collection of essays on all known viruses edited by Thomas Milton Rivers. Rivers, a typhoid survivor who contracted the disease at the age of twelve, went on to a remarkable career in virology. In 1926, he was invited to speak at a conference organised by the Society of American Bacteriologists, where he said for the first time: "Viruses appear to be obligate parasites in the sense that their reproduction is dependent on living cells." Vaccination, originally the infection with cowpox material; from the Latin vacca 'cow', is the administration of a vaccine with the aim of protecting against a (transmissible) disease. It serves to activate the immune system against specific substances. Vaccinations were developed as a preventive measure against infectious diseases. Later, cancer vaccines were also developed for cancer immunotherapies. A preventive vaccination against an infectious disease is based on specific, active immunisation against the pathogen and is therefore also referred to as active vaccination or active vaccination. The aim of active immunisation is to enable the body's own immune system to react to an infection with the pathogen so quickly and effectively that no or only a weakened infectious disease results. A distinction is made between live vaccines and inactivated vaccines; the latter also include toxoid vaccines. On the other hand, passive vaccination (also known as curative vaccination) is merely passive immunisation through the administration of antibodies. Vaccines against a large number of viral and bacterial infectious diseases are already available. Further vaccines against some major infectious diseases and against chronic infections that favour cancer are currently in development.
