A.P.Polo - "Ousia" - Hamburg (Germany) Ousia ("being", "essence", literally "beingness") is a central concept in ancient Greek ontology. A common translation is "substance" (or Latin essentia). However, it is problematic because it only reflects part of the spectrum of meanings of ousia. Generally, the term refers to being from the point of view of its permanence and to the "essence" or "nature" of something as the constant factor that establishes a continuing or time-independent identity. The contrast to ousia is formed by changeable properties whose occurrence or disappearance does not affect the identity of their bearer. Plato introduced ousia as a technical term into philosophical terminology in the 4th century BC. He used it to designate the ontologically stable, unchanging and essential, whereby he was able to tie in with the idea of permanence associated with land ownership. In this philosophical sense, ousia expresses that something has the property of "being" in the sense of a constant being. This is what the literal translation "beingness" refers to. Since Plato only means a true being in the sense of an unchanging reality, ousia can also be translated as "reality". At the same time, Plato also uses ousia to refer to the essence of a thing (that which gives the thing its permanent identity). Depending on the context, Plato's ousia can in some cases be translated as "being", in others as "essence". In addition, other meanings occur in his work, which shows that the philosophical use of the word was not yet clearly fixed in the initial phase. For Aristotle, too, a natural constancy is what constitutes the ousia. For him, an ousia is a single thing that exists independently as such. This existence is made possible by the existence of a stable substrate that ensures the constant identity of the thing despite all changes of variable properties. In this substrate, which underlies the existence of the individual thing, its ousia exists; the thing as such is the substrate. Therefore, even in antiquity, ousia was rendered in Latin as substantia, a noun belonging to the verb substare, which means "to be present underneath (or in the process of, in)", "to lie at the basis of". Substantia expresses that something underlies, but does not encompass the totality of what can be meant by ousia in Greek. It is not a faithful translation, because substantia does not reveal the connection of ousia with being. Already in antiquity, another, literal Latin translation was also used, which refers to the basic meaning "beingness": essentia, derived from the verb esse ("to be"). The artificial word essentia was created specifically for the purpose of rendering ousia. Its creator was Cicero, as reported by Seneca. In late antiquity, some authors (Augustine, Calcidius) still used essentia as a synonym of the more common term substantia. Under the influence of Aristotle's translator Boethius, however, a distinction was established that became decisive for the use of the term by medieval and early modern philosophers. According to this understanding, substantia is the standard translation of ousia and expresses its substrate aspect; essentia has the meaning "essence" and stands for the characteristic nature of a thing, which gives it the defining features and thus a certain being. Substantia refers to the being that belongs to the individual thing as such, essentia to the species and generic nature that the individual things have due to their belonging to species and genera.
